hello, i'm new around here...so please bear with me, automotive maintence isn't my hot spot but I'm slowly trying to change that with my supra.

Anyway, i believe my fuel gage to be cursed...or at least a part of the fuel system. The reason being is that the gage likes to wander anywhere between empty and 3/4, depending on RPM and whether or not the car is on a hill. My first thought was there was a leak somewhere, so I parked the car on a levlel surface and had a buddy rev the engine while I checked for leaks under the hood and across the length of the car....nothing, no leaks from any hoses or the tank.

When the car is idling, the gage will slowly bob down to empty. When the engine revs above about 3K, it quickly drops down 1/4-1/2 a tank. When going up or down a hill the gage will go down between empty and 1/4. I turn the key to the "on" position, and if the gage is at empty it sometimes rises to 1/2...if I turn the key off and back to the on position it will go down to empty.

Now, I don't know how much is in the tank...which brings me to my next point. When not moving up or down in it's madness it rests at about 1/2 a tank. This wouldn't be much of a problem if I didn't just fill it up 40 miles ago. I checked the air filter, somewhat dirty but not too bad...but I'm replacing it anyway. I don't want to get into the expensive habit of buying costly parts with money I don't have, so I want to get some opinions of people who might have had similar problems or know of a few good ways how to fix it.

So what could it be? The sending unit, injectors, pump or regulator, divine intervention? It's an 87 non-turbo that's stock with the exception of wiseco pistons. If there's anyway I can ghetto it to save a few bucks until I can come up with the cash I'd gladly appreciate the feedback.
