Carbon fiber trim progress.

So to start I am making a carbon fiber trim kit for my wifes 88 turbo. Her original trim was rusting so we took it off asap. Now we had to choose, buy a new trim set and hopefully get one that matches, or shave the sides smooth as I have done with my 89 or make a new carbon fiber set for it. As you guessed in the title the idea we are going with is CF trim kit.
So I am writing this now because I have to take a break from the killer heat today (95 or so, yea places are worse but its bad enough where I dont like it), A/C went out in my shop the other day so I am doing without and I figure while I cool off I would post here. So first off I am wondering if anyone has ever done this before. Secondly I have two good templates now and am wondering if anyone would be interested in a set for their car, and thirdly I wanna know what you all think of the idea and what it looks like. After writing this I am gonna make the second style trim, but for now here is a pic of the first piece. Just so you know this part was done to test the mold and I just did a wet layup. The later parts will be done with vacuum infusion. I am also almost done with the mold for the window vent in Cf, but it will take some more sanding and touchup before it is done and I can show my first(well actually second) vent. The first was actually dry layup so with the mold I can make vacuum infused parts.

Taking another break while the next piece sets up. I got the first part trimmed. The pic does not do it justice it looks really good. Btw this is a Black blue hybrid fiber, CF and Kevlar. Unfortunately today is my only day off for another 4 days so I dont think I will get this done very fast, but im gonna try to set up the mold so that I can make one part per day after work. I do have vacation coming up over the 4th and im taking the whole week off so I should be able to get the entire car done by then. Need to get a set of valve seals, it seems that I have blown them on the JDM motor I got. God knows how old the seals are, but the valve seals were the only things I didnt change when I freshened up the engine.

you already know i want a set. and since you asked me before you even started making these i want to be the first to purchase:). But im coming over monday morning to take that dash out. hopefully i can have that one out mine out and that one in in a day. imma damn sure try considering mondays the only day i have off. ill see you then. ill bring some beer too.

The other thing about this piece that makes it look strange is that my wife wants it to completely hide the original recess that the trim usually sits in. I think for future setups I will have it more closely match the original size and shape. I should be able to get one piece done per night and I am making 40 inch long parts so the smaller parts beside the doors will come out of one piece. Hopefully on Sunday I should be able to get most of the kit done, then I have to work out the mounting system (since this kit sticks out further than the original) unless I can change my wifes mind about it and we go with a more recessed piece something more similar to stock.
Btw I dont think I am even gonna try to do a set of 89+ style ones but doing the one off style I am really it would just be another layer below the original of a different color so maybe I will do something like that. Tonight I am gonna work on a vacuum infused part had problems with the vacuum infusion yesterday, I added the wrong hardener so it activated too fast. I am also working on some led conversions so while I'm waiting for the CF parts to set up I can work on the lights. Here is a pic of my light, im gonna redo the face in CF to match the trim then put it on the car.

The CF trim was an idea I had also. It doesn't seem right to me raised like that. In for final pics though. The Vacuum lay-up should look much better. The LEDs look sweet.

Well the primered car is mine and the blue car is my wifes. I am going to make a second set of led turn signals to put on her car just wanted to put up the pic for reference, I made the parts for the light last night just have to attach them to a lexan cover then attach the light grid to it. Here is an old pic of here car. Dont have any new ones its not in great shape. Tonight I will get the lights together and on the car the next day probably. I am gonna have to change out the flasher and do some modification to the tail light indicator. Also tonight I am gonna finish the led tail light, she is taking my one piece spoiler and im getting her 3 piece whale fin. Which is fitting since mine is a 89 and hers is 88. I will get some better pics of her car tonight. I think im gonna make another set that is more recessed, I think it will look better.

Yah, the fitted looks way better in my opinion. You should use some quick detailer and clean the area behind it. That would make it really pop. Is that a blue weave or the car color getting picked up?

I think these would look good on a white car, but not soo good on my blue car. The two colors would clash.

I was originally gonna go with black cf but my wife wanted the blue/black hybrid fiber. And I would finish detailing the car except the foam pad on my buffer ripped apart, guess thats just 10 years of use for you. I have a new one on the way. As for attachment, I am going to use the factory attachment points and make some cf clips to hold them on then use normal trim adhesive, the double sided foam stuff for top and bottom. Also they will have the normal screw holes that attach them to the front and around fenders . For the pics I am just using the tacky tape I use for vacuum infusion.
