Carbon fiber driveshaft. Worth it? OR NOT!

I bought an alum. driveshaft on ebay for my 7MTGE R154 and it was an 1 1/2 in. too short. That got me thinking about a carbon fiber one, but the only thing that I keep thinking about is the damn thing shattering. Are they strong enough for the money or am I better off getting another alum shaft? One that fits of course. Whats the weight on carbon shafts?:icon_conf

well duane (upgradedsupra) has a carbon driveshaft on his car. hes putting down some good numbers and it hasnt blown up on him yet. id love to get one for my next car. i just need to find a place that sells them. last i saw suprasport was the only ones that had em' and i dont think they carry them anymore.

dont quote me on that though, i havnt gone looking around for a driveshaft in a long time, so there may be a few more places carrying them. i hope there is, i want! :biglaugh:

I would get an aluminum one just cause the carbon fiber ones are made so as a "weak link" for higher horsepower cars so that the DS will break first instead of the trans or rearend. IMO just get another aluminum one from SS or HPF unless you are running over 500whp.

they used to offer one in CF, but last i checked it wasn't offered anymore.

regardless, ayemate had debunked my logic. his sugestion makes more sense. i forefit :biglaugh:

i believe from what aye mate posted, the aluminum one would be best just for losing rotating mass in the drivetrain, but the cf one would be better for a high hp/performance application, as it will shatter from a shock load to stop your rear end or any other part that is harder to repair from exploding. :icon_bigg

I have cf ds from TMS for 2 years. It weights 12 or 14lbs, don't remember. It is not much lighter and holds same torque as aluminium but far safer for high hp applications. If it is broken it will fall into straw-like pieces and just brush your bottom. I am not even sure if driveshaft loop is required when running cf shaft.
CF DS has some "give" in it and not so hard on tranny and rear end. It has no natural frequency, less chance of vibration. At least this is what I have read about it

P.S. AFAIK Duane broke U-joint first and then snapped the shaft, hope he will confirm this
