So I was talkin to my dad about trying to find a place to get some body work done on the car and maybe get it painted, and I was telling him I was thinking about MAACO or this place called The Recovery Room. He told me to check out the local trade schools and that when he was growin up he used to take his cars to the trade schools around his house to get work done for basically nothing.

Anyone ever do this? Think Wyotech or UTI would do this?

It's good for cheap repairs/work. But I personally wouldn't do it on my Supra. My DD yea sure, I don't care about some little things not being perfect, but remember, it's a school and they are learning on your car... I dont want experiments being done on my car:icon_conf

I'm just looking into this for them to do the majority of the prep work for paint, maybe fix my one dent. And that's a good idea to find out who's the cream of the crop, hah. I didn't even think of that.

I just want them to sand my car for me, lol. Cause if I can avoid doing all that then I'd be happy. But I'm definitely not having them paint it. I'm gonna talk to the instructors and if I can't get the top students (that are AT LEAST half way through that part of the program)...then I guess I'll be doing it...*siiiiiigh*

If you bring it to one of these places, Macco will fuck it up.
but if you bring it to a school, the instructors make them do it right
even if it takes them 10 tries. They do a good job, its not going to be a $10k paint job, but its going to look better than macco, they let that shit run
and they dont tape worth a fuck.

if you prep your self (which you have already said you dont want to do that..) then you can get very good results.

its all in the prep work buddy.

otherwise, if you want a great job done with with out having to do any work, be prepared to find a GREAT shop and instruct the dumptruck driver where to unload all that money youll be spending.

Maybe I'm leaving out details or something...

I want them to do the majority of the prep work (or do it all if they're really sharp)...but I CAN do the prep work myself. Just really would rather not. And if need be after they finish prepping the car, I can go back over their work without a mountain of sanding ahead of me.

The plan with painting is to take it to a good collision repair shop (decided against Maaco, too many horror stories) or maybe to this shop that just opened that is apparently painting show cars.

Put it this way, if they do it, It will end up lookin better than it looks now, I got money on it.
even if they are learning, on it, it still will look good.,

Yeah that's what my Dad was saying. I'm going to go up to Wyotech today or tomorrow and talk to them. It probably won't happen til around December, but I'm trying to make a gameplan and follow it as much as possible. (I'm finding out it's working better than just doing things on a whim and only when I feel motivated, lol)

When I was back in HS at my vocational. I knew a couple guys in the auto body and I had them paint my rear bumper and my hatch and they did an awesome job on it. All I had to pay for was the paint and clear.
