Since I've gotten my car running again, it's been giving me issues with not wanting to start. I'll turn the key and the relay will click, pump will prime, and lights dim but it doesn't crank. I was thinking it was relay realted b/c whenever it first started doing it, if you pushed the relay in or just moved it around the car would start the next try. But was wondering if it could also be the starter contacts, basically wanting to find out if I should check the same things I'd check on a M series motor. Also can I use 2J contacts?

Any help appreciated...

The relay on your starter is beginning to die. Just get it refurbished, should cost max $50 It's a pain to get the starter out though.

Next time it won't start, turn the key quickly and repeatedly from 'on' to 'ign' untill the starter reacts. Sometimes you will need 5x, sometimes you will need 10x. But in the end you will need to replace it. And the hotter the ambient temps, the more it won't start.

I have the EXACT same problem. It drive me absolutely nuts too. Tottaly intermittant, it will just click when the you go to start. Although, In my case i know its not the starter, ive had 3 in there, with the most recent being a brand new starter. Im wondering if there is a bad connection in my wiring somewhere, Im about to just run a direct wire to the starter solenoid from the ignition wiriting.

Does the relay in the car fail often? I never consitered looking at it b.c it worked flawlessly with the 7M and i just assumed it was a 1J related issue.

Thats the first thing i assumed after I installed a new starter and still had the problem. Come to think of it, there was a spade connector on the orginal starter when i recieved it. I bet whoever owned it in japan had to do the same thing.

The problem with mine just started happening, and the car sat like my sig says sat for almost 2 years only being started a every now and then. Before it sat when I had just finished getting the swap done the car would fire right up every time.

I'm gonna try what Rich said, might be a stupid question where would I take the starter to get the relay refurb'd? I got a few days at the end of this week I won't have to drive the car so I can add that to the shit to get done list.

I'm not from the usa but I guess it's the same over there; the place where you buy all sorts of automotive parts mostly also have a service to refurb starters and generators. If they don't they probably will know of a shop who does.

Thanks for the help man, I'm going to try several places around here. I think I may also have a 7M starter lying around, might try throwing it in there.
