Car started, died, won't start now...

At 6:40 this morning, Went out to go start my car to let it warm up before leaving (daily routine)...It started up perfectly normal, was running for about 12 minutes and I was getting ready to walk outside to leave and it just shut off (as if someone just turned it off with a key.) I didn't set my turbo timer so I was confused already. Went outside to start it, it won't turn over. It sounds like it wants to, but it just doesn't want to start. I could come up with a million explanations for why it wouldn't start, but it fired up fine and ran for a while before it just choked off. I'm already late to class, but I'm going to stay here until I fix it. :nono:

My car did that one day. Wiggle your CPS connector. It was also the one and only time that happened.
I started my car in the morning, went back in the house to have a bowl of cereal before work, and heard it die. (open dp)
went outside, and cranked over with nothing.
I remembered "wiggle the CPS connector" from thousands of threads, and did it. Fired right up.

My battery is not the case. It is getting plenty of power, my voltage is low 14. I think it is the cam angle sensor. About a month ago, I accidently cracked the outside of the CPS (so it looks terrible seeing a brown thing spinning while the motor is running). I'll give it a whack once I get home in about an hour. Thanks, Brandon.

Okay, fixed it. Thanks, Brandon! All I did was move it around a little bit (CPS) and then went back and it fired right up. Now, here is my question. Would this be as a result of a loose connection or need to be replaced or just one of those things that happens for a reason?;) Yes, Shane, your words were very well spoken at 2-3 in the morning while you were walking through the woods. haha.

Ughh...That sucks. I really hope I don't get to that point...Before I finish with this thread, Question:

Is it possible for me to be sitting at a stoplight and it die on me because of the CPS? I surely hope not because if so, I"ll be taking back roads and country roads from now on. :(

The wires at the CPS connector are shorting out...had the same problem on my old motor. The insulation was old/cracked, exposing the wire. I did a splice/re-wire for each wire and it fixed it.

And yes, it can (and did) die at stop lights. :3d_frown:

Oh dear... Yeah, about 2 months ago, I can't remember how, but I accidentally cracked the outer casing of the CPS so you could see the center part of the piece spinning..."Jiggling" it around today, I broke even more of it off...so...Looks like I'll be doing another project this weekend on the Supra...
CPS Rewiring. Any good tips for the ol' Jeffster would be greatly appreciated.:)

If Brandon was referring to me, my name is Kurt.

The CPS cover and seal together will cost you less than $5 from the dealer. That or get the billet aluminum one from arz in the misc vendor section.

Glad to hear it worked, btw.

CPS rewire is fairly straightforward as long as you don't mix up the wires.
If you're taking it off the car, then you're doing it the right way.
Desolder all the connections and replace with similar colored wire if possible. You now have a choice of using any style connector you wish.
On the harness end, splice back into the harness about 8" in to get to the better quality wire that hasn't been exposed.
My favorite method is to use a standard butt connector with the plastic shielding stripped off, and a piece of heatshrink over it instead.
I don't suggest solder on any part of the harness that moves, due to the heat weakening the wires, and making them brittle, prone to breaking and causing large headaches down the road.

good luck. it's not too hard as long as you don't mess up the wire colors..
