I have an 86.5 NA. The car runs perfectly except it just starting stalling only when I'm coasting and nearing a stop. It's really wierd as there are no other symptoms. I've read some threads here on similar type issues but the strange part about this one is it's intermittent. Might go 30 miles with no problems and then it happens. Research seems to indicate the TPS or ISC but just wanted some feedback before I start spending time on this. Very strange.

Forgot to mention as I think it'sis pure coincidence and has nothing to do with stalling but speedo cable broke right before this started happening. I mean within the hour.

try having the car in neutral and idle. stopped. does it still turn off? is your idle sometimes low or a bit high? if yes, then your isc is bad

It seems to idle fine while stopped. around 600 - 700 rpm when warm. The only time I have ever had a problem at idle is when its scorching hot outside in the summer, after shutting the car off when its very hot, it might idle very low and even stall sometimes. I've learned to live with that as it too is not all the time and in fact didn't happen much this past summer. But I cant live with this as I don't want to get rear ended when it stalls.

Of course it's winter now here in NJ and cold as hell.

I would venture to guess that you have a small leak somewhere after the AFM . When you coast to a stop you run really rich because your ecu thinks there is more air then you actually have. I had the same problem in my turbo because I was using ole stock IC piping.
Start at the AFM and look for any leaks working your way all the way to the head
. MAke sure you check the joint between upper and lower mani,ISC,TPS,and any other odd place. Don't assume anything is too small. Good Luck and try other people suggestions as well

Timing is fine. I did however see a friend today who has worked on Supras for a long time. His suggestion is to fix the speedometer cable first before getting to far into it. He thought the fact that the car has TEMS and with the speedo cable breaking there could be an issue as TEMS does detect when braking from high speed and is always monitoring. In fact, we bumped up the idle to about 800 RPM and its not stalling anymore. Perhaps fooling TEMS until cable is fixed did the trick.

TEMS has no control over what the engine does but your friend's opinion is still valid. Repair the speedo cable so the speed sensor can tell the engine ECU when the vehicle is traveling less than 11 mph. It needs to know this for idle speed control...

I've replaced the short speedometer cable and it solved the problem. The idle went right back to normal and the tems is now working fine again.

It's a pleasure to have the car running great again.

Thanks for all of your help.....
