My brother and I are working on my friends celica, I'm coming to you guys because... well you know your shit!
It will shift into gear when the car is off. When it is on, it will not go in. It was leaking fluid below the clutch pedal and from the slave cylinder. Went ahead and replaced the slave and master. Bled the system. Adjusted the clutch position on the rod of the master cylinder. There's more pressure on the pedal now but it still won't go into gear.

What do you suggest next?
Thanks,
Alex

Put the front of the car on stands (at least one side), pull one of the inspection plates off the bell housing. Start the car in neutral and push the clutch in. Watch your flywheel. I had someone not tighten the flywheel bolts down on one of my old cars... There were only three left, one was finger tight, one was backed halfway out and snapped off and one had just broken loose. Happened right after a long interstate pull.

Edit: Just noticed this wasn't a Supra. Try this anyway if you can.

I'm going through the same thing you guys are. I installed both clutch master and slave and bled it properly. It turns out in my case I put the clutch disc in backwards. I dropped my tranny yesterday and discovered it. Now I have to put it back up and button everything up again. The flattest side of the clutch disc should face the flywheel.

Start with the engine off. Put it in gear, then start it, note whether the car still tries to move while starting it.

If so, your clutch release system is not working in some way. It's not that complex on the Supra - not so sure about the Celica. The older ones are hydraulic systems like the Supra as I recall, but I don't know a damn thing about any Celica post 1986.

Clutch, flywheel, etc are all installed correctly. The clutch hasn't been touched for years and has been fine until now. It moves when started in gear, so yes, it is an issue with the clutch release. The question is what? I feel like I've done all the correct steps in order. My brother was told to try bench bleeding it so I guess we will try that next.

Next step is checking what's changed... if the clutch was working before, chances are it must be something that was just touched - or one of the new pieces is faulty in some way. Did you replace both the master and the slave? Is it leaking fluid now - try pumping it a couple hundred times and rechecking the fluid level. Did the slave get seated properly on the lever? Is it possible to watch the slave move while pumping the pedal on that setup?

Yeah, replaced the master and slave. Pumped for a good 5 minutes and the level didn't change. Yes, I can see slave move when pumping the pedal, it is very accessible. I'll have to go over it and double check everything, make sure there are no leaks, etc.
