Hi i have an 87 Turbo. im taking the engine out to build it up, so i got everything off that was in the way, the two engine mounts out and the eight trans bolts out. i have it suspended by the cherry picker and trying to wiggle it loose but it wont slide out. i talked to someone and they said that the spline could be rusted and the clutch plate is stuck on the rust. im using sockets to put in between the block and the trans and wiggle it to space it out more but it doesnt want to budge. has anyone had this problem? you have to remove the clutch fork.
i dunno if i should bother saying this, but you should really invest in a repair manual. even a shitty haines manual would have made you aware of the fact that you have to remove the clutch fork to take off the turbo tranny.

did you unbolt the flywheel from the pressure plate because that would let it slide in and out a little but not come all the way out.

Wouldn't unbolting the pressure plate give you a bit more clearance for pulling the engine? (making it so you don't have to pull the engine as far from the trans)
But yeah, aside from the possible clearance issue, you would only have to do one or the other.
I really only think thats easier if you have a lift to put the car on. I thought it was going to be a bitch to get the engine back on the tranny when I was putting the engine back in on mine(i did it just like he's doing) but it was a piece of cake. I just lowered it in until pressure was off the picker, moved the hook more to the front of the engine to angle it, got the flywheel under the tranny lip, moved the hook back to center, lifted, and it popped right in. I didn't have to move anything. As I jack it back up with the picker it slide backward onto the tranny. If I had preangled the engine that would have been done in 2min. took me about 5.lagged said:
ok the mkiii came with two different manual transmissions.
the r154 and the w58.
the r154 has a pull type clutch disengagement system which requires you to remove the fork (or PP) to remove the transmission from the engine.
the w58 uses a push type which does not require this for removal.

Haynes manual I've got doesnt tell you to remove the fork, I went thru a great deal of frustration with this as well, then just removed the fork.
