If your really in a bind and don't really care about the engine anymore and want a really quick fix, you can try JB welding the exhaust studs onto the cylinder head... THIS IS should be a temporary fix only! the heat and all will beat the crap out of the JB weld and will eventually fail from what i hear.

YES it is possible because I have done the two rear exhaust studs that is around Cylinder 5 and 6 and if you have a steady hand and know what you are doing than yes.

Yes, of course you can...with the right tools. Or did you mean without taking the head off? If you really meant with the manifold on it's going to be more tricky and you'll end up with something goofy since the helicoil bit is bigger. Frankly, I'd take it off and do them all. See bigaaron's recent thread on this subject for a good solution.

it takes what, 20 minutes IF that to take off the turbo and manifold?

i would get pretty frustrated trying to helicoil a stud hole with the manifold in the way.

theres the right way to do things, and then there is the wrong way.

Yeah but if he takes off the manifold more bolts will strip out. Believe me I know :D. Still he should just replace them all while he's there. Some are very hard to reach even with a 90 degree drill attachment. And you need to make sure you go in straight or bad things will happen.

I come from a land down under
<hint> They tend to strip out from either abuse (too much torque or not enough) or when the Head anneals :( (I know this seems to be a pet subject of mine but it's real and the exhaust side is where it happens first)
