Can we talk about gas for a minute? High octane discussion.

I need some info on gas... I saw somewhere, one time, a graph that shows what the octane rating of gas would be if mixed in proportions... Does anyone have that link off hand?

I picked up 7 gallons of 104 unleaded for when I dyno saturday... I plan on dumping it in with about half a tank of 93... So I wanna see about where my octane level will be... I wanna make sure it's going to be safe for 28 pounds of boost...

Now, since we're talking about gas, let me get some input from you high horse power guys who run with race gas... ***I say "high horse power" because we all know that if you use high octane and dont NEED high octane *low hp* then it can be more worse than good...*** Anyway, what's the risk to running leaded fuel? Around here, 104 is the highest unleaded fuel... If I were to mix 112 leaded with 93 unleaded, what would it do? Would it lessen any negative effects from the lead? Also, will leaded fuel mess up RC Eng injectors?

Any links or info would be appreciated...

Thanks,
Jake

leaded fuel will decrease the life expectancy of your o2 sensor.

o2 sensors hate leaded fuel. :(

No cat, I live in Fl, dont need one...

According to that chart, I guessed we have a 14 gallon tanks, and a 50/50 mix of 93 and 104 would yield me a 98.89 octane rating... Is that safe for HIGH boost?

we have 18 gallon tanks.

you just cant ever burn it all off cus the pump sits at a point where it runs out of gas hwne there is still a couple gallons in the bottom at all time.

one a seperate note: srry dont want jack thread::
do our fuel pumps burn out and get destroyed if they are run untill our gas runs out or can they run without gas circulating through, i ask cus there are some vans and trucks i know of where you have to replace the fuel pump if it runs out of gas.

98 octane is our pump gas in the uk infact some one has only this week introduced 99 octane pump gas

and to be fair i never really had a problem with it on last engine althoug i had some times used to add an octane booster to take it to 102 octane which was much better

when i finish my current rebuild we can get 120 octane race gas here so i might even try that few guys over here use it in evos for rallies apprently its like 40hp on standard evo so i'm told

I think your octane ratings are different than in the states. Don't quote me, but I think your 98 is close to our 93.

Jake,

I have heard WB 02 sensors are much more sensitive to leaded gas, but that is just what I've heard.

Maybe Al Jordan will chime in since he runs 110 leaded regularly.

I can get 110 at BP a mile from the house for 4.29 but have not used any yet.

Thanks for the link CT... Good reading...

We have 18 gallon tanks? DAMN...

And my tank will run dry, I dont have a sock fuel pump/system...

Anyway, 104 unleaded should be good, Im going to run it as low as I can before adding it in ...

I'd still like to know how you guys feel about running leaded 110/112/114 gas...

The pump is in the gas, and the gas keeps it cool, so running out will eventually burn it up if you do it often. The pump comes on initially during the cranking mode, then once the engine starts, it keeps running. So...if you run out, its not as bad as some other cars that the pump keeps running when the key is in the on position.

You mentioned not having a sock on the pump intake. You definately need a sock/filter on to keep debri out of the pump.

Jake: Just checked my owners manual and if you can suck the tank dry you have 18.5 US Gallons.

Can't see how you could hurt the pump running it dry as soon as it's out of fuel the car stops anyway and you turn the ign off.....

MrNick: I think that's a typo and Jake meant his fuel system is not Stock.

Running leaded is fine. It might make your O2 only last 50k miles instead of 100k miles. But hey, that's the tradeoff for running leaded.

Actualy, you'll probably toast the 02 sooner than that.

in the U.S. the MON and Ron is averaged and in the U.K. its the higher of the two (not sure wihch that is) thats why the UK's octanes are higher.

I put 8 five gallon cans of C16 thru mine in a row. The wideband still works fine. A couple of cans for a dyno isn't going to kill you. Not enough octane for 28 psi just might though. $65 for a new wideband sensor is chump change compared to new pistons anyway.
