well my dad is anal as F^$% i just had a long ass argument with him over how sythetic oil "kills engines" cus 20 years ago he used castrol and it leeked out of a gasket that was held together by gunk. anyway he's stubborn and senile and thinks if its been repaired is never going to work ever again. hence his 20k mile 89 pickup.

anyway my car has a bad flexplate. in his eyes it goes to junkyard cus its screwed and a damged money pit or we sell it. too bad its my car and i payed for it. anyway he is gonna rip me shit for the next century if i mention the bad flex plate part.

questions: can a flexplate be changed in less than 6 hours???? having never unhooked the auto tranny and taken it off before??? i wanna just jack it up when he leaves for work, and just pull and swap then reasemble in one swoop. and have enough time to cleanup.

my worries, bellhousing bolts. i looked it over and i cant even see some of them so detatching the tranny looks like the hardest task + reattaching.

i wanna get every aspect mapped out so i can just drop the sucker and get it done without any big "WTF IS THIS" comments going on.

+i really dont feel like paying some overpriced greesemonkey something like $600 to change a plate.

comments, pics, experience, time frames are what im looking for.

everything i have ever done has been on time frame. and so far i have never failed.

first off, synthetic oil has come a long ass way since it was first introduced. second, if you have a small leak, synthetic will make it appear worse. it you have a good solid, non-leaking motor, chances are that synthetic will be fine.

as for the auto tranny, i'm not quite sure, as i have a 5 speed. i think the main problem for ya would be the two bolts at the top of the bell housing. you need about 3 feet of extensions and a wobbly or two to get up in there and get them out. i would START with those, because if you cant get them out, then there's no use trying to do the job in a certain time frame.

then its simple stuff, like speedo cable, detent cable, front driveshaft piece, a few wires/connections, etc..

make sure you get new bolts for the flexplate FIRST!, as they're probably torque to yeild. (dont reuse them!!!)

take the car there... the flex plate will still do it's knock thing lol... then rip it off there and not stress too much

Hey if it helps i have a flexplate i can ship ya if ya need one its from a non turbo auto.

I dont know where in WA you are, but we <the bellingham crew> might be able to help you out.... thanks to my car, we have a lot of practice slammin stuff in and out.
alternatively, if pops forces you to drop the supra, we could always use another car in our fleet.
hopefully wont come to that!

the old syntech oil will leak out off high mileage engines. we've all heard it before, if people maintain their car properly. they would know how much oil went where.
first lesson in owning a car.. check all fluids regularly!

by yourself first time - no way you can do it in 6.....after some practice.....maybe. Go somewhere where you wont be harassed and save yourself a full day and take your time.

oh i've been runnin sythetic for a LONG time, its just my valve cover leeked and i had a few drops on the driveway that my dad freaked out about and starting lecturing me. what he says has no influence really. I have never had support for working on cars from him, he couldnt change his caliper on his truck. i'll move out before i sell it. i'll live in that uncomfortable back seat if i have to. i know all about oil and that stuff just explaining why i cant really do it at home. its not an old engine 73k miles and i clean it twice a month. change fluids and filter every 2k miles. kwnate and 91tbreezin have seen.

as far as materials. im looking aftermarket. but people dont seam to care about auto's i guess. meh stock or whatever is what im looking at + extra parts.

flex plate is not broken, its still good just i know its going bad cus i can hear it buzzing and i know its a matter of time. the issue is most of my friends are fairly inexperienced and dont know my car the way i know it.

i would REALLY like to say im taking a road trip somewhere and just do it out of home but i need my tools and a workplace. and its almost winter so my car isnt very highway worthy unless conditions are perfect.

right now what i'm doing is mapping out every part that i WOULD take out. like bellhousing bolts. i'm gonna just try taking them off and putting htem on and see howthat goes, just practice disconnecting. and figure out a way to keep crank locked in position so i can loosen and tighten flex plate bolts.

im on a mission!

hell if i take my time and manage my money i could just swap my worn tranny while im at it with another one with new clutch packs. i got a friend that would probably let me use his appartment while i assemble hte thing. as you can see my car is my independance. so far dad thinks i only know how to change oil and put a k&N on my car. every other BPU is unknown to him. hehe.
