Can I upgrade turbo without doing anything else?

I think my turbo is making a screaming/scraping type of noise (something is...) so, I was wondering if I can get a 57 trim for a little more performance. But would I need to get a different AFM or something? Or can I just put on a better turbo and call it good?

Do you have any other supporting mods? I don't think you'll hurt anything if you put a 57 trim in and leave it at stock boost levels, but it would be best to have an upgraded fuel system, intake, and a good flowing exhaust.

Easy way out - no. Your fuel cut will save you should anything go wrong, or you boost too much. I would at least get a walbro 255lph pump. They are only $100 shipped. Matter a fact I have an extra one laying around i'd sell ya cheaper. That way if your engine does need more fuel you have a pump that can supply that much fuel.....well at least as much as the 440cc injectors will allow.

Also, if your gonna spend money on an upgraded turbo, AT LEAST get a downpipe with a turbo elbow. Our stock ones are ridiculously restrictive. The wastegate basically opens to a wall. You probably wont get great gains with a 57 trim and stock elbow.

like its been said, fuel cut will save you. and if you dont have a turbo back exhaust yet then try to save up for that too.

Bone Stock, but I also live in Cali. Would the bigger turbo and exhaust cause any smogging problems?

THanks for the help guys. I'm quite naive and ignorant on the mighty Supra as a relative newbie...

So the consensus answer is that it's OK to run a 57 trim? A 3" catback and a DP would be OK as well?

So what I'm asking is do I need a different AMF or some form of electronic tuning to go this way?

i'd investigate the issue you have with your turbo.
take a real close look and see i there is really some scraping going on. check for play and monitor for smoke.
an aftermarket dp (divorced recirc) will allow better flow of all those spent emissions. the stock elbo really has to go,as it was mentioned before,it burps out to a cast iron wall basically.
if you do improve the turbo, helping it breathe a exhaust would be the next purchases i would imagine.
just read through posts or search to find a good intake and exhaust so you wont be spending money on stuff that will do rather than items that will be just right!

DO what supraman said, and spend a few minutes to take your accordian hose off and check your shaft play, and spin the compressor wheel to see if it is the turbo or not. The ct-26 is honestly quite a decent turbo with an unrestrictive exhaust and intake, and in my opinion, should reach most daily driver power goals.
