Can I remove a lower timing cover with the pulley still on?

I finally got my 1.5JZ all back together and installed in my car before I went off on vacation, only to notice a coolant leak. Long story short, the water pump is cracked in half and needs replacing.

So, I'm just curious how much work I have ahead of me tomorrow. Can I take the lower timing cover off a 2JZ while the crank pulley is still on? Or do I have to take it off to gain access?

Yep, you need to get it off, the waterpump is half behind the lower cover and 3 little bolts from the lower cover are hidden behind the pulley.
But you're not on your own though, I need to get mine off as well, I popped my fms...

You keep surprizing me Rob, first you manage to collect the crank thrust washers in the oilpan and now you cracked your waterpump?!? How the h*ll did you manage to do that?

Probably from rolling it off the truck and not using a hoist... :icon_razz

No, the rolling it off the truck didn't hurt it :)

It was the knocking the engine stand over, and having it land on the pump that did it.

Anyways, yeah, I noticed that the timing cover went around the pulley. No biggie, I made a really easy to use puller, and got it all fixed up now. Took me about 2 hours to change the pump out, re-do the timing, and put everything back together.

THE 1.5JZ IS DRIVING! The extra 20% displacement makes a huge change with this turbo. It now spools around 4k, as opposed to 4600 before. As long as the 2JZ bottom end likes revving to 7500, I'll be happy.

Oh, best part, NO CRANKWALK!

I don't know, but shaft end play probably shouldnt be like 1/4" :(

So, in conclusion, having the BOV too close to the turbo, causing surge, will kill said turbo in like 3000km, even if that turbo is FUCKING MASSIVE. Let's see what Precision has to say on the warranty.
