Ok. You can poke fun because I do ALL the time. My step brother has a 97 Eclipse GST. He is 18 and calls me when he has problems. The only mods he has done to the car is an SAFC-II and BOV. The car has been sitting for a year, finally he got a new clutch to get it going again. There was nothing done to the engine when he parked it. However now when he starts the car it will idle but as soon as he hits the gas it stalls. The mechanic that has it is only a transmission and body guy. He has told him that the injectors are not getting a strong signal. he has 50lbs of fuel pressure.

Questions Can the SAFC-II forget its programming? the battery was disconnected for the year it sat. Could it just be the gas has gone bad after sitting a year? Also I was told it does not have any codes from the computer.

I know this is a supra site but I told him I would ask. He’s a good kid so I want to give him somewhere to go.

BTW this car is for sale that’s why he fixed the clutch.

thanks for the advice!

I can only assume all the electronics and engine is ok. The car sat for 1 year. It ran good when the clutch broke. Nothing was done to the engine it just sat. It took him a year to get the money to fix it. (hes a little lazy)

The gas should be taken out but if it starts that cant be the problem. How does it measure its air/fuel, I'm going to guess with a maf since map sensors go to limp home mode when they fail. Look inside the housing to see if the wire is broken and take some resistance readings to make sure thats working up to par. Thats at least a start since it can be multiple things.

I's say check for loose wires.
SAFC-II can cause this problems if the conbnection somes loose or the wires ( if spliced with a connector) can oxidize and have no more contact - Which is the reason you always want to solder it.
BUt I bet it has something to do with the SAFC-II

I had an SAFC I sitting in my basement for about 4 months or more, and IIRC, the manual states that the settings will not reset, even after pulling the battey, which I found weird, but go figure. In fact, here's the link (1st paragraph):

http://www.apexi-usa.com/pdf/productDocumentation/202.pdf

It states removing the batt. will not affect data. Data must be initialized within the S-AFC.

BUT this link is for the SAFC-I which is weird cuz I clicked on the documentation for the SAFC-II. I'm sure someone here can ck. their SAFC-II instructions to verify.

HTH!

Take the ECU out and look at the capacitors.

If they look like they have syrip on them, its a blown ecu.

Very common for the eclipse.

I thought that was just the 1g?... going through that problem right now on a Galant i just recently picked up.

check the settings on the afc to make sure its still setup properly.... IE for flapper or whatever type the eclipse is..... sounds like thats the problem to me...

however i wouldnt drive it with year old gas either so change that out...

and yes afcs WILL lose their settings now and then....i had mine lose settings twice in the time i had it..... for no real reason..... also if he has lose wires with it that maybe got nudged etc it might not be putting the signal through to the ecu....

Hmm... that's quite disturbing. I guess timely cks. of the settings should become a prudent practice.

Improper connections or the wrong sensor setting (use Karman on DSMs) on the SAFC can cause a lot of headaches. I learned the sensor setting one through experience with my Talon, as my SAFC sensor setting got switched (still don't know how) and I went through everything trying to find the problem. Finally I looked through all the settings on the SAFC and saw that it was set incorrectly, switched it back to Karman, and the car ran smooth as hell immediately. It was more of a problem for me because I had 660cc injectors on the car.

If it's not the fuel, then it would have to be something with the airflow (check for leaks) or spark (check wires and spark plugs). Obviously, the motor simply needs air, fuel, and spark; if it dies, it's not getting one or more of those pieces. :)

Let me ask this, Can I just unplug the SAFC II at the quick disconnect? and see if the car starts. We just want the thing to run so we can sell it. If that fixes the problem we will leave it out and use it for another car.

ALL FIXED. When I finally got to look at the car I noticed when you turn on the key the SAFC II did not light up like mine. No logo or any display. Just the button lights up. I unpluged it and the car works now. So I guess its broken.

Thanks for the help...

Well, u may want to double ck. your wiring. I taped up my Innovate RPM Converter the other day, (which also has the wiring for the SAFC next to it), and after startup, I noticed my SAFC did not work - my orange buttons lit up, but no logo. I re-ckd. my wiring, and then the logo and everything started working. Just a thought... Hope it works out!
