Camp fire noise...

I noticed today while parking my car after trying to figure out my boost leaks that when I parked the car it made like a camp fire noise after I shut it off. I just wanted some opinions on this to see what it was. It wasn't overheating or anything but the smell of whatever was burning was sooooo horrible. It smelled of something burning but no smoke is visible. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Did you check on the exhaust side of the head for oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold from the valve cover seals? That could make a pretty noticeable smell, and if it was slow enough it may not make much visible smoke.

Do you notice any water/coolant loss? If so, check for pinhole leaks in the turbo's water lines on that side of the engine too, you may be spraying or dripping some water onto the exhaust mani, which would probably make a little noise and a stinky smell. It would probably be a sweeter smell.

It sounds more like the turbo side twards the back (fire wall). I know what coolant smells like and I am pretty sure it is not coolant although I am leaking some but not externally. Its not an electrical fire either...... Maybe the mice are camping out lol.

Is it just momentary right after you shut down or something you can hear even after stepping out of the car and opening the hood?

Check your timing.

You could be really superheating the hot side of the turbo.

Also, does this car still have cats?

Still has cats and the noise continues for a while after I shut it off (maybe a minute or two). It almost sounds like something is boiling/sizzling and then cools down.

Dumb question, but have you looked under the car to see if you got a plastic bag caught on the exhaust or cat? Once one melts onto the exhaust it makes sounds like you describe and stinks. I did this with one of my MKIV's about 2 months ago and it's just now going away. Plastic is some amazing shit...
