is it safe to remove some of the cam material at the base of the cam? i was looking at new cams for toyota's (stuff at college) and noticed the base is alot thinner then what is in the 7m, i was thinking i could have my other cams cleaned up and lightened.. is it worth the time? could take a pound of rotating mass off?

Ive never really heard anything bad about the cams as far as their weight or rotating mass. The head seems to hold up fine with everything as is. I figure youd be doing more harm then good by attempting it.

I'm not understanding the reasoning behind this Pimp?

They turn at half crank speed are small diameter so don't have a lot of mass and the back side is the base circle of the cam which is needed to operate them.

i was just tring to ration why toyota did it, i figure even though it's small , it's still mass the crank is connected too..

im not talking about changing the base or lift duration or any thing, just the width of the lobe on the base, (back side of the lobe) to about half the thickness it's currently at..

i would imagine if you do the exact same amount on each lobe there shouldn't be any funny noise or vibrations..

Maybe the new cams you have been looking at are variable lift cams which have 2 different lobes which are much thinner than our cams because the tappets are in two parts for the two different lifts and are opperated by oil pressure. Hope that makes sense.
