Well im in process of installing my cams back in the 1j. i have a reman head with titanium valve springs. so i put stock cams back in tighten them down, put my gears on and moved cams so the front lobe was pointed up and i checked the valve clearances and they are all tight! nothing will fit between the valve and cam! what would the problem be?? do i really have to take out that much of the shim??

Sounds correct to me. Harder springs, with polished seats will move the valve a little hair towards the camshaft, decreasing the clearance.

You will have to put a smaller shim in and then add or subtract the amount needed to get within spec.

You can try playing musical shims until you get a gap to measure or go buy the smallest shim and do each one at a time. Considering new ones are like 5-7$
