Rust red like mine... even then , I like seeing things go 'round. :)

I would give you a pic but its more a lack of timing cover, not a clear one that I have right now.

I've seen lots of people running w/o the cover at all. Is this safe? And where can you find a clear cover?

No that is not safe, something can fall in there when your engine is running = toasted engine. You can find one at here (all the way at the bottom)http://www.carbonfibrefx.com/products.html and here http://suprasport.com/view_category.asp?cat=65.

I didn't see one on carbonfibrefx.com????

its cheaper than suprasport here: http://www.jscspeed.com/mk3/mk3_index.html?/mk3/mk3.htm

that's where I was going to get mine

and i would never run without a cover on the gears

you know this thread made me realize something funny about my self and probably others? if somebody asked me if it was safe to run without the upper timing belt cover i would say of course not, something can fall in there and chew up, or break your belt, or worse depending on what it is, it could stop the crank from spinning (maybe thats a little far fetched..anyway)

but this has made me realize how lazy i am. because i didnt feel like putting my cover back on so i am running without it now.

also i will tell anyone who asks to make sure to solder or at least use crimp connectors on their electrical connections, but i regularly twist my wires together and tape them off.

i never realized before that i do that, i dont follow my own advice. anyway, back to your regularly scheduled thread.....

No problemo. I'm gonna get me a Ati because the quality is amazing plus Duane uses it so you know it good, and also alittle cheaper.

These clear covers look like they are just for the cam gears. What about the upper cover? The one that surrounds the oil cap, etc. Is it okay to run w/o that?

Perfectly fine. I also don't know why people think it's so dangerous to run w/o the upper tbelt cover. I lost mine after my first rodknock (early '02) and have never had an issue (nor on my ae86 before that). Think about what it would take for something getting in there just driving down the road. The tbelt breaking isn't an issue either as the 7m is non interference. Worst case, you could damage or break a gear and/or the housing. I'm not worried about it. Better safe than sorry isn't bad though.

yeah better safe than sorry is my reasoning for reccommending its usage.

but same as you, i have not had a problem running without it. i am just extra careful not to spill oil or water or drop anything down there.
