I'm looking at buying a MKIII, but it has a few issues with it, and because I'm a newbie, I do not know what will be the rough estimates to get things fixed. I plan to do the work myself, I guess I just need prices of parts, what might be a long/short job, and what might be a major/minor issue. The car's a '88 Supra Turbo, hard top, 5 speed, 140k miles. Body is in good condition. Interior is decent. But there's a bit of work to be done on the car:

Problems/Needs:
Battery
Front and Rear Brakes (Rotors and Shims)
(4) tires (the ones on the car are nearly bald)
L/rear strut blown
Both upper and lower ball joints very loose
Power steering rack seals blown
Outer tie rod ends
Cooling system is very rusty; needs total flush (hopefully only that)
Needs clutch soon / grabs all the way at the top
Sunroof doesn't work

Good:
New engine and turbo, ~20k miles
It's a stock car. No mods.

What would be the value for a car like this? (US$) Thanks for the help.

wa.
i'd pay like $1k or at most $2k if hte engine and body are realy damn good.
shit like batteries fall under your maintenence cost and its allot to maintain this car
rotors can get about $300
tires your choice you have to research
struts about $100 ish
joints dunno hit midas shouldnt be too much
seals i have no idea
tie rod ends about $100
cooling probably total about $200 if ya need a new rad and new "RED COOLANT"
clutch about $100 or more for stock kit
sunroof who knows depends.

then ontop of maintence you could spend anywhere between $100 to $400 right away just changing filters and fluids getting it to a good smooth running condition.

its costs to have this car.

Thanks for the opinion. Anyone else agree/disagree/differ? I'd like to know what the general experienced supra owners feel about this car before i dive/don't dive into it.

I would be wary of this rusty cooling system... Has the car been sitting for a while? Motor may be new but do a compression test.

ishh ya, cars that sit are bombs waiting to blow. Everything dries out, cracks and shit so...taht no good. Occasionnal driving is always good but still.

Have it checked, compression tested specially..se how the engine is..tranny engagement and such. Dont rush into buying, make sure its a good buy

I wouldn't buy it; a car that requires that much work has been neglected and a 17 year old sports car that hasn't been maintained is a money pit. The Mk3 is so undervalued that it's much cheaper to find a car in better condition.

hmm I agree with 7mgtejoe, if all that has been neglected...damn...just imagine the surprises that are waiting around the corner for you ;) gives mk3 bad rep..ull just get mad at it,, but its the owner u gotta get mad at...all cars need TLC mk3s included.

Mine has 300 000km, and the interior is...well new lol..the guy took care of it its just amazing. The body..well im in Quebec so salt kills...but its well maintaine specially that i have it now ;)
