How do you go about building your own hardpipes?

I have access to a metal/machine shop and defenitly have the tools to do it, but how hard can it really be?

I've never built anything custom before, should I just take out all the stock IC pipes and copy them with some exhaust pipeing?

What's the best size for my 87 turbo, 2.5?

If I have access to a shop, how much in parts do you think it would cost?

After I fit the pipes, should i get them coated with something? where do i do that?

I built a custom set of 2.5" pipes for my 84 turbo car. used Napa aluminized mandrel bent pipes and welded them together. painted them blk.

does anyone know the lengths you need?

There is no set length. It entirely depends on your turbo/manifold/ic setup and how you aesthetically want them to look. There are several different designs, your best bet is to check out pics of other peoples setup and copy the design you think looks/performs best, the less piping and bends the better.

i used about 9 ft total length for the stock routing of the pipes, i think i ordered the following.

3) 45 ells
3) 90 ells
1) 180 U-bend

If you like the look of my style IC pipes, I could do a write up for them.
Not to mention a possible kit priced to sell cheap from MDC.

This is all the piping I used:

Started with five 2.5" mandrel u-bends, I have lots of piping left over.

(piping is steel, its painted black and has steel reducers welded to fit endtanks, cheaper than silicone reducers.)

How much might an exhaust shop charge if I brought them all my stock pipes and told them to duplicate them with steel 2.5inch pipeing?

i just need a length of aluminum pipe to replace my 3000 pipe. like... a foot or two to be sure. you think napa would have something like that? the rest of my upper ic piping is 2.75", but i could deal with 2.5".

Too much, and it's not worth it.

I don't know any muffler shops out of the phone book who can do mandrel bends.

alright then i guess i'm doing what i originally wanted to do... take out all the pipes and try to duplicate them, or make them better, at the metal/machine shop that i have free access to.

EDIT: would this be a really good time to upgrade the intercooler? to what?

and where is your BOV blackout_89t?

hummm i have made alot of set's

remmber going the stock path sucks ballz get cone filter if you don't have one

so you can root them better just do the jbl mk3 way but with mealt

that the easyest to do

there is better ways to do it i use 3inc pipeing for the 3000 pipe then goes donw to 2.5 to ic to turbo is 2.5 to 2.25

this is the best ic piping i have ever made and i have dyno resalt fomr them as well i think it was 25 hp or some thign
