Broken Arrow, Ok
i am in the process of finishing a bhg job/lexus afm-550's-fuel pump etc./rebuilding the bottom end and was wondering if there is any specific amount of mileage that i need to go to ensure proper break-in of the engine?

i know how to do a proper break-in just need to know how long and if there is anything that i need to know about this, thanks

Mike

All depends on how confident you are that all the tolerances are correct.

Take it easy for at least 500 miles increasing RPM's each 100 miles and don't idle it for extended periods and vary the RPM's on the highway.

Use this time to make sure everything is 100% before you lay into it.

Meh... Do like I do... Rev it to 8000 rpm and dump the clutch... Then throw it into reverse a few times, and while rolling backwards, put her in first and dump the clutch again... After doing this once or twice, you wont have to worry about breaking your motor in anymore... :D:D:D

there was actually a theory that putting more pressure on the motor aka revving higher and driving more agressivley caused the rings to seat harder and more secure.

David:Agreed but this all depends on if you're confident in the tolerences and state of tune and that everything else is perfect and ready to be hammered!

Our Cars tend to be a bit tired in general and built to a budget by novices this is why I made my suggestion.

Well just a tib bit, the original owners manual suggests a break-in period of 1500 Kms, (which is 932 miles). I am getting my engine rebuilt and my mechanic suggests about the same.

i havne't rebuilt a 7MGE yet, but have done many performance chevy and ford V8s (built one for a 'maro that ran 8.7 in the 1/4...

if i'm building for general driving at least 500mile break in, not to hard of driving, slowly running it harder and harder till you hit the 500 miles...

mild performance build, drive it hard, but not WOT for about 500 miles, run it for longer periods of time if you can

high performance (molly rings, forged pistons, full roller setup...you get the idea) to get the molly rings to set good they have to get HOT and be driven really hard, and with the roller setup they don't have to break in...pull it out of the garage, take it easy till its up to operating temp then have fun :)

it all depends on what kind of build you are doing and what you are wanting out of the build, somthing that will last a long time as a DD, or something that will run for a while, but need work more often just for drag racing...

i'm also not a huge fan of turbos, i'm a supercharger freak (from my domestic days) and i haven't found a good one for the supra yet, so when i get a new daily driver, i'm going to build a strong NA engine for my supra

im just doing the same thing i did when i put my nitrous motor in my firebird, im not taking my supra over 3K rpms for at least 500 miles, then not over halfway between 3K and redline until i hit 800 miles, then only 11psi till 1K miles, then crank it up after that
