Brake lights come on with headlights - Don't put an 1156 in an 1157 socket!

The first time I drove my 1989 at night, I noticed that the brake lights (even the 3rd light) were ALWAYS on with headlights, but the brake lights worked fine when the headlights were off. I didn't see anything on the Supra forums about this, so I decided to pull all the bulbs before inspecting the yellow box under the left tail or the brake switch under the dash that seem to cause other brake light issues.

Turns out the previous owner jammed an 1156 bulb (1-pin bottom) into one of the 1157 (2-pin bottom) tail light sockets. Doh! That single pin on the bulb shorted across the 2-pins in the socket, lighting up EVERYTHING on the brake circuit. According to some other forums, this has also been caused on other cars by filaments crossing in 1157s.

Just figured I'd put this out there in case anyone else stumbled across the same issue.

This makes sense because a 1156 is a single filament bulb and a 1157 is a dual filament bulb. Glad you were able to get the issue resolved easily.
