I am wondering about what to do with used brake fluid. I was told it was fine to mix it with used motor oil and dispose of them together. I was at a local parts place and took in a container full of brake fluid and told them what it was and they didn't seem to care.

On another forum the topic came up and someone said you can not dispose of brake fluid with motor oil. Is it a state by state thing, some places being more strict or what's the real deal?

I want to do the right thing with the used fluids.

Mix it with motor oil....no way to prove it was you and it's illegal for shops to not accept it! It's just going to be burned for heat anyway.

Pretty easy to prove it was me when I had them a container full of it. Here they have to dump the fluid, customers are no longer allowed to do it.

Also, I want to dispose of it properly. If mixing it with the engine oil is bad I'd like to know the proper way.

I mean don't bring them straight break fluid....mix it with used motor oil and they should take it...other than that I have no clue:-(. All my used oil of any kind all go into the same container and the local mechanic shop takes it:)

The shop I work at mixes all the waste oils together- Power steering fluid, brake fluid, hydraulic fluid, trans fluid, oil, and brake clean to name a few. We too have oil burners and they don't seem to care what we feed them, as long as the coolant concentration isn't too high. Even then, it's kinda hard to get 10,000 gallons of oil messed up with some milky BHG oil and such.

brake fluid is a petroleum product so mixing it with any other petroleum product like motor oil, gear oil, etc. is not illegal. What you're doing is fine.
