1) Should I be able to hear my BOV in my stock 91? What does it sound like, and when should I hear it? It's an auto if that matters.

2) I do have a K&N drop in, and have since heard that it can dirty up my MAF. Is there an acceptable cleaning procedure I need to follow? Or can I just shoot some carb cleaner through the thing?

Thanks you guys.

1) You should hear your BOV every time you let off the gas if the turbo spools. I have heard that it should not flutter, it should be a "woosh". Mine did the "woosh" and i never had any problems with it.

2) DO NOT CLEAN THE MAF ELECTRONIC (aka vortex meter)! Ours are very sensitive and do not like to be messed with. K&N is a good company and i have never heard nor had a reason to think that it would mess up the MAF some how.

Can the BOV stick closed? I NEVER hear a woosh sound, and I have a stock muffler, and a quiet car..

I heard the oil from the K&N gets into the MAF and reduces your power.

mine was stuck open and i still got a whoosh sound...however you only really heard it when i was at 12 psi. at 7 it was difficult to hear sometimes with out the top off and really listening for it...

It should release the air when you let off the gas and go into vacuum.

A vacuum/boost leak...can cause your bov to malfunction.

Compressor surge is pretty loud though and very distinct...and would be the result if your bov isn't working.

since it recirculates i dont think it'll be very noticeable.

i think crc makes a maf sensor cleaner but don't fix whats not broke'd.

k&n's filters are oiled so they catch finer particles, but the only times when excess oil could get into your afm is right after you've cleaned and reoiled the filter and used a bit too much oil. just follow the instructions and you'll be straight.

you can buy a bosch 110 bpv for cheaper at autozone or advance. oh and don't hate me if my post is wrong. im NA and just drew that from memory. i know it's bosch and i know its available locally, and generally cheaper than a toyota replacement. works like it should, too.

If you have compressor surge, change the BPV (Stock BOV). If it is stuck closed, then you will get compressor surge because the air is going back thru the turbo.

Clip: When I said dont clean it, i meant do not clean it... with anything, unless you want to start looking for a used one that works. Or buy one from a dealership which IIRC was over $300. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

EDIT: You will definately hear the BPV more with higher boost (intake, exhaust, boost controller).

sorry, but I gotta nail this home...

DO NOT SPRAY ANY CLEANER INTO THE AFM

The ONLY way to clean it is to remove the electronics (CAREFULLY) and then chean out the housing. Then, CAREFULLY, wipe dirt and crap off the vortex generator post and off the temp sensor probe. Do NOT get ANY cleaner, dirt, ANYTHING into the holes in the electronics box.

To the other questions, I knew my stock BPV worked fine, but with a stock airbox and everything else being stock you can't hear it unless you're REALLY listening for it...
