boost gauge not working

Well I fired it up for the first time today and all was well untill the timing belt came loose. Well we were doing break-in and the boost guage never came off negitive four. Well Im pretty sure its the boost guage thats not working but is there a way to tell? I held one of the rubber intake tubes and it seemed to be pressurizing but not very much. any ideas?

is this the stock boost gauge or an aftermarket one? the stocker is very, very slow to react, so chances are, unless you stare at it, you most likely wont see it move quickly while at idle.

also, there is a boost pressure sensor mounted to the driver's side wheel well. it's got a vacuum line going to it, as well as i believe, two wires. check to see that there's actually a vacuum line going to a good source, and that the wires are plugged in.

as for the timing belt loosening up, check to see that the tensioner isnt bent. mine bent and it looked like it was supposed to be like that, and i kept losing time on it. that took me a little bit of thinking to figure out. the bracket should be straight. :) good luck!

well we actually got it on the road a while ago and got on it pretty hard and the boost gauge jumped up to 4+ PSI so do you think its the guage or just a stiff turbo due to the new rebuild and the first run on the road?

oh yea its the stock guage.

no, the turbo's probably fine. the stock gauges are SUPER slow to react. i highly recommend you get a good aftermarket one. you'll see the difference, it's like night and day!

How's your BOV? Is it a stock one, new or old?

If thats shot, then you will have terrible trouble building up boost until the air is being rammed into the turbo (high speeds).

I didnt think it had a BOV?? I thought it only has a wastegate?

Its starting to get better as I drive it... boosting up to zero every now and then... is it supposed to be a -4 all the time till you get on it?

Yeh im pretty sure -4 is ok.

Well it has a Bypass Valve, but the function is the same.

To test it take it off and see if you can blow through it. If you can then it is allowing air to bypass your turbo, giving you less boost. Obviously its not too harmful, just little fun for you.

I put a centrifical supercharger on an 89 Iroc and we didnt use any blowoff valve or anything just straight into the intake....

Ill try blowing through that thingy tomorrow... but I cant believe that the thing is actually running....and running great....I also have a leak at the throttle body i dont know how its leaking but it is...brand new gasket too.

By better, do you mean a $200 upgrade, something like an HKS?

Try looking around and doing some research, especially in the products review, (kinda hidden under the 1JZ tech thread).

Yeh, just get a Bosch one.
I'd be a little worryed about puttin that stock one back on in the mean time, because if it doesnt open again, well then youd have an even bigger problem to start dealing with.
On Ebay, look up Supra BOV or something like that if you want a stock one. There might not be a stock one on there. But take the advice of others and just get a Bosch 110 BPV (BOV). You wont regret it. When buying a Bosch bov from ebay (not suggested) you need to ask if its a 110. Read cruzinbill's link for more info on that.
