Alright first i off i just want to Thank Supramania for the archives of anything and everything on the 7m. My Swap would not have been possible without it!
So just finished my swap! Fired right up idles great, good throttle response, really couldn't be happier with how all of that went down. Since its a fresh build i have been heat cycling it and following my engine builders instructions to the T. However, Noticed that after the motor got to operating temp the turbo began to intermittently not boost at all. instead of spooling up it would get to -5 vacc and then make a weird noise. kinda like a duck quack mixed with metal on metal, but it was very short and abrupt. then if i let the it idle for 2 minutes it would spool maybe once or twice again before making that noise and not building any boost. Let the motor cool down and then drive it again for a little til the noise returned.
Now the water temp never got higher then 160-180. After a phone calls with friends, came up with the possibility the main bearing on the turbo might have gone since when the oil would get hot it would thin can change the tolerances of the shaft and maybe the noise was the wheel hitting the housing? Pulled the intake and found that the shaft now has measurable play and it was fine before.
So researching further, i have fallen victim to a knock off HKS ssqv4 replica. the amount of anger i have isn't really measurable since i had cut no corners in this build. So back on track, i was noticing a large amount "flutter" when ever letting off the throttle. Sounded like Surge to me but was told it was prob just the SSQV. It is set up to recirculate as to not run into the stalling issues that seem to be common in 7m's on factory electronics. Now i know for a fact that all the bov stuff was set up correctly. i measured vacuum on the ports and used all new everything in the system.
Now i'm not sure if the bov was just not working, or not letting enough air by. Low boost would flutter, anything over 8psi would dump like it should sound. So, the motor literally has maybe five miles on it. it idles fine, will spool up til operating temp rises.
So i am going to pull the turbo to be rebuilt and i am going to have my intercooler piping modified to another style valve.
What do you guys recommend for a replacement valve? Any opinions on what else to check before re-assembly? it was also having a stall problem when coming down from a rev over 2500rpm(could be ecu learning the new electronics?)
Thanks for any help!
-Mike
