Blu-ray too Small for Metal Gear Solid 4

Kojima speaks out to Famitsu.
by Martin Robinson, IGN UK

UK, March 3, 2008 - It seems that the tech companies will never be able to keep up with the demands of a Metal Gear Solid game, with Hideo Kojima stating in a Famitsu interview that Guns of the Patriots suffered cuts in order to fit onto to a Blu-ray disc.

At 50GB, the Blu-ray offers nearly six times the storage capacity of a DVD – but it's still not enough for the demands of Metal Gear Solid 4. Earlier last week the game's assistant producer Ryan Payton confessed that the American and European versions would not carry the Japanese voice track due to storage limitations. Hideo Kojima further elaborated on the issue and stated in a Famitsu interview, kindly translated by Kotaku, that, "There's not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress."

It's already known that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will be dialogue-heavy – to an extent that could well outstrip its quite comically verbose predecessors. But the possibility of the amount of chattering outstripping even a Blu-ray disc is quite terrifying. Brace yourself for an earful come June 12.

Which just shows how IMPORTANT Blu-ray is compared to the far smaller DVD9 the 360 uses. There will be quite a lot of games that will be damn near impossible on 360 because of storage restrictions. By the end of the year 100gb-200gb BR's should be here.

That is just crazy. I had no idea that blu-ray had that storage capacity. I'm lowtech when it comes to that sort of stuff.

The problem is not storage, is the data compression. Hell, i can fit a whole 720p HD movie in perfect quality for my widescreen flatpanel, on a single 4.7gb DVD - so its not beyond the major studio's realms to utilise h264 or the same bitrates.

Blu-Ray provides a lot of storage space, but its all pointless if they use it all up on stupid codec'ed media...

cant they use multiple blu ray just like they used to do multiple cd roms? or would that drive the price up a bit

Oh, ok. Like I said, I'm really lowtech when it comes to computer stuff.

there extremely overpriced, so its ok to be out of the loop ;)

As for this game its all in the compression. I believe they are using for the most part "raw" footage. If there were to use quality compression they would have plenty of space on the 50gig disk. Yes i agree MORE GAMEPLAY, LESS DIALOG!!!

Oh my god.

I will *not* listen to 50gb worth of fucking talking. If I want a movie, I'll buy one - for $19.99, instead of $59.99

If you don't like a live-action movie/video game, the MGS series is NOT for you - plain and simple. Take your business to another franchise, but don't ruin it for the true fans by complaining and trying to make a great series into what YOU want.

Doward - like i said, its to do with the shitty compression thats being used...probably only 30 mins of stuff, but because its encoded at some stupidly high bitrate at 1080p with a shitty MPEG2 codec, thats why the space is taken up...

I love MGS but it still has way too much goddamn talking.
1 and 3 were bearable but 2 was beyond stupid when it came to the amount of dialog. There is way too much talking for what could be said in much fewer words.
The shit nightmare was the best story in any mgs game. :biglaugh:

2 was awesome. If you look at in the whole what it will do for the series in the end sort of deal ( AKA MGS4 ). I'm hoping it will really get into the patriots. 1 and 3 where also the shit. I really love the story in MGS, so I don't mind the talking...

I wonder if we could find out what codecs they are using... most BR's use MPEG4 now days.

And there are some good deals on BR burners.

Uh, yes.... its one of the best series ever. If your starting from scratch, and have a GameCube... get Twin Snakes instead of original PS1 MGS. It's a better version. There is a MGS anniversary pack coming out soon. Its like $20-30 with 1-3... should look for it online.
