I have thick smoke that just won't go away. I can't boost past zero on my boost guage. My compression on my cylinders are good, radiator level remains the same with no fluid lost. Is this the signs of a blown turbo?:1zhelp:

Yes and no.

First, check for boost leaks. IF the smoke is thick black, you have a blown boost hose.

Second, check your BOV if it is stuck open. Again a major boost leak.

Third, check your cam timing. Turn by hand the crank pully (sp?) to the 0 deg mark. Take the front cam cover off. Look to make sure that both cam notches are straight up.

Fourth, take the intake off your turbo. Can you spin it by hand?

Fifth, does the turbo have massive amounts of shaft play?

Sixth, take the turbo elbow off and make sure the wastegate isn't stuck wide open.

Seventh, do a leak down test to make sure you dont' have a blown head gasket if the smoke you are describing is white.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks, I'll check on those items over the weekend. I don't understand though how a boost leak will make such a huge amount of smoke and I mean HUGE to the point that you can't see anything behind the car (talk about James Bond.) The blow off valve maybe, (the lost of metered air will causes a rich condition) but my Air/Fuel meter only reads one bar above green. Can someone take my to school on this, I really would like to understand the therory behind it all. By the way, I checked my tail pipe and found oil residue in the pipe, and I did a leak down test while I was checking the compression and that was fine. Please help.

"FULL BLACK" and killing everything in sight. It is so sad, I just got this car back together after busting a rod around two years ago. While I was in the motor I decided to just build it to take a beating. Ross pistons, Toga high performance main/rod bearings, ARP main, rod and head bolts, HKS stopper head gasket, Toyo rods (shot peened and cryo). Put in a NUR-R spec cat back with a Cat. less R/T down pipe, SupraSport turbo elbow, Hks PFC Fcon w/ GCC (I also have a New old stock Rebic lc I picked up in Japan while deployed there), Lex upgrade, 550 cc injectors, Walbro fuel pump, AFPR, and the heart and soul of the motor a SP61GT turbo (Internal wastegate) that I just put in three moths ago. Needless to say I put my heart and soul into this car and now I am heart broken and clueless. Help Please!!!!!!!!

Damn it I just posted a reply to this thread. wtf?!!
Boost leak means that the turbo moves tons of air, the AFM meters tons of air, the fuel injectors inject tons of fuel, and the motor sees almost no air.
THat equals diesel black smoke. and lots of it.
Check out my thread, Boost leaks... to see how to test for them.

The "oil" that you see is comming from:

-A leaky tranny seal. Its seeping its way back there.
-A leaky oil seal or gasket on the engine. Again seeping its way back there.
-Condensation from the car not running for so long. Water + soot from exhaust = nasty oily crap

UPDATE---Pulled the intake hose to check the shaft play on the turbo and found out that the shaft that connects the two impellers broke in half. $#!*,

This unit was only on the car for three month and never saw anything over 6psi of boost as I was still breaking the motor in. I purchased it from AAP motorsports.com and have tried to conntact them about a warranty repair or replacement but their web site is closed down. Sent an email to sound performance about it and have not heard back from them yet. The Christmas season has already put a strain on the wallet so I hope that I can have it repaired under warranty. Wish me luck in getting this turbo replaced or repaired under warranty, if not I just might have to start selling some of my stuff to come up with the cash to get this job done.

By the way, we say "Merry Christmas" as well but in this day and age of the politically correct dumb F---S, I didn't want to risk getting sued. Ha, Ha, Ha or was that Ho, Ho, Ho. Well MERRY CHRISTMAS to all drive safe, and happy boosting from the Island of GUAM.

Don't worry about being "pollitically correct" here.

We're all family.

Pics of what the carnage please?

You need to check a couple of things:

-Debris in the intake tract
-Debis in the exhaust housing & manifold
-Broken BOV

Sorry, no pics to post, my digital camera was stolen six months back. The break in the shaft was contained to the bearing area. The exhaust side impeller is still intact with the main turbo but just flops around. You can spin either side independant of each other. I don't want to mess with it as I just got word from Sound-Performance .com that it has a one year warranty so I will be sending it off on Monday of next week. I have inspected the exhaust manifold and it looks ok, I will be doing a oil and filter change just to be on the safe side. BOV is brand new and still good.

Thanks again for all the help.
