Alright,
ive observed and read the guide on sf about polishing things. But still very unclear on as what to do.

I need the types of buffing compounds, buffing wheels, sanding wheels etc. I would like to polish my valve covers this weekend :)

I realize you use a grinder and file to get the pits removed from something like the 3000 pipe and work your way up from 300 grit to 1000 grit wet sanding and then just use the buffing compounds? Is this true? What do you use to protect the shine and polish?

For me, it's really simple.

I start with 80 grit, followed by, 120, 240, 400, 800, 1000 & then 1500. After sanding with 1500, you'll se the luster. Hit it with Mother's polish on with a buffing wheeled bench grinder. Repeat the polish two more times, cleaning it thoroughly between the buffing sessions. A dremel is handy, too.

I did a valve cover in less than two hours.

Use a palm (orbital) sander. You'll never get it done with a dremel.

practice on a fuel rail first...its a little bit eaiser than the 3000 pipe and manifold...i learned how to do it from polishing up an extra fuel rail and i turned out pretty good. but as for teh waxes i auccally went to sears and they had a section devoted to polishing and craftsman has a package thats like 10 bucks and it gives you all the polishing waxes and compounds you need. check that out
