I jacked the front of the car up, let the engine warm up, and cranked the wheel lock-to-lock many times with the cap of the sp res.

the level in the res didn't change.... is that supposed to happen?

I expected the level to drop?

it normaly does drop. what were you doing that you had to bleed the system? have you driven the car since doing so and do you hear the pump growling?

did you reuse the old pump and if so, I am assuming that you unhooked the lines and that is why you are bleeding it or did you also change the pump. one other thing, this may be a dumb question, but I have to ask, when you where turning the wheel lock to lock, you did have the motor running correct?

i re-used the old pump, yes. I went from non turbo to turbo so i changed reservoirs and drained the old fluid.

I put new fluid in and started the engine with the front wheels off the ground.

and yes, I had the engine running :)

what kind of fluid did you put in there? we use dextron ATF for our powersteering, not powersteering fluid.

did you unhook the high pressure line from the pump or did you leave it hooked up and the pump in the chassis while swapping the motor? if you left the pump hooked up and just swapped the reservoir, then you should be fine as any air that got into the system with the reservoir unhooked will have just been flushed into the reservoir as you added new fluid. best bet is to drive it and see if you have PS and if so, just watch the reservoir and add if it drops.

actually it a good thing. the reason is is that your normal old run of the mill (not Honda or jaguar which is mineral oil based and are the same fliud) PS fluid and ATF are basically the same, the differance is that ATF (dextron) has anti-foaming agents in it and that is what makes it better for use in PS systems. They are both hydraulic fluids

The way I flush the PS in my cars is disconnect a hose at a low point in the system. then fill it up and start the engine and turn the wheel few times and level it off. do that a few times and you'll have it all flushed out.

... Yeah I found it shocking when Yota took Dexron ATF. Cheaper really, easier for keeping fluids handy. So I think it's kinda of a good idea really.

Our ps systems are a self-bleeding system. If you are turning the wheels lock-to-lock the pump relief will open (you should hear a groaning noise) and that will ensure that no air is in the system.
