Just finished installing used turbo engine (jdm) and it smokes worse than any engine I have ever seen, mostly upon accell and decell. I had the head off, bores looked excellent (still showed cross hatch, no ridge) replaced guide seals and re-installed with arp bolts. I'm new to turbos, but have heard there is a seal in the turbo which, if bad, can cause big time smoke. How to tell, and is this a difficult rebuild/fix?

Take the accordion hose off and see if there is shaft play on the turbo. In and out and side to side.

So I checked for shaft play as installing engine, but it had been sitting several years and thou shaft seemed tight then, now after running it had side play enough to hear a click when you shift it, I would guess 10 thou or more. No end play that I can feel. Guess the seal is leaking oil to the exhaust. Can I rebuild this, or is it a major deal? If I need a pro, how do I find a good one in my area? Nashville, Tn
