Make sure that before you do it you read up on the FAQs. There is a lot of stuff you may want to get besides just the headgasket while there is so much room to work with.

do you guys swear by getting the head and block lapped like Reg recommends. Im looking for all your guys experience who has or hasnt had it don, but particulary, the ones who havent had that step and have miles are their motor as proof. Thanks

UGH...there is no IFS, ANDS, OR BUTS....to do it PROPERLY...you MUST resurface both the head and the block to even get close to the RA requirements....

if not...you run the risk of it blowing from unprepped surfaces...PERIOD.

well yea resurfacing was my mantra whenver i talked about metal head gaskets but i ran into a guy in town (keep in mind his car wasnt tip top when it comes to looks) but he put in an hks metal hg and only did resurfaced the head, all he did to the block was putty scraper and cleaning. he's put about 30k miles on it like that on 12 psi and its held like a rock. so it all depends on the car, you can get away with it if you do a damned good job but its A REALLY REALY good idea to resurface the block.
as for the head dont even ask just do it.

im sure there are plenty of people who have GOTTEN AWAY WITH IT...but why even chance it? spend the extra money and do it RIGHT...

not resurfacing both...like i said before...will leave your car in a status of : daily possibility of bhg.

If you’re going to make the effort to do something, do it right. Of all the head gaskets the HKS has shown to be the least tolerant to short cut's. Unfortunately many people do take short cuts and that is why there are so many stories of BHG's. I believe an RA of 5 for both the block and the head, is recommended for the HKS MHG. That is hella smooth. So yes you do NEED to do both in order to insure reliability. I have heard of an MHG fail in the first five minutes of being ran on a head and block that weren't prepared properly.

Ok then maybe I should have asked for a definition of resurfacing first. My understanding of resurfacing (before) was to have the head and block milled or shaved or whatever you want to call it, and that lapping was above and beyond. Also I have heard, since I havent checked into machine work, that it is a challenge to find a machine shop that will even have lapping equipment. Sorry in advance guys as I was not trying to ask the same question again. I just wanted an idea on the extremes of the prep and what is and what isnt necessary. Thanks
