alright well im going to try and tackle a bhg repair this weekend. i'm starting thursday night and hopefully i'll have the head off by friday afternoon to get it to the place thats resurfacing it.

im pretty nervous about shit going wrong randomly, like what usually happens to me when im working on the simplest of tasks. things such as my exhaust manifold studs coming out/snapping off, getting the gasket seated correctly, getting the timing back on correct when reassembling.

i plan on spraying most of the "what i think are rusted and seized to shit nuts and bolts" a day beforehand with some pb blaster. is this okay, and will it help? i only have a $25 torque wrech, but autozone doesnt have a digital readout one to rent so hopefully their "regular" one will be better than mine. so to sum my post up, im just worried about shit going wrong. im confident that i can get it all reassembled as long as its not broken, or needs to be repaired.

any quick tips before i get my ass handed to me? please dont say not to do it. i absolutly have to because.....a. i cant afford to have it done, b. my car overheats in 15 min and c. its my only daily driver.

Borrow a good torque wrench if you can. I'm sure someone has one that they can either lend, or come down and torque on the studs for you.

HG job isn't the biggest deal.
Just take your time, replace as many hoses as you can while they are easily accessible, and do the little things like new thermostat.

You should be fine. We're all pulling for ya. ;)

::edit:: ziploc bags/sharpie ftw!

drain ALL the oil and water out of the motor. when you lift the head, if there is any left it WILL fall out and drip down the coolant and oil passages. oil in the coolant passages isnt a big deal. but anti freeze in the oil passages, is no good.

I second what everyone has said here... Also, When i did my head gasket, I pulled an all-nighter like what you are planning on doing. Started at 7PM, ended at 8AM!lol

Some things that I got kinda confused about/had trouble with, (especially when it's 2AM, and you're really sick) were the turbo oil lines...unhook them from the BLOCK, not the turbo like I did...and make sure you have new gaskets for those oil lines...and the EGR Valve must come off to get the lower intake manifold off...loosen the bolt in the timing belt tensioner pulley BEFORE you pull the timing belt off, it makes it much easier, and won't get damaged (ask me how I know)...lol..and don't forget to put toyota seal packing in the specified are between the head and block when assembling. Follow the TSRM every step of the way.

You will have to replace every gasket you disturb, and the TSRM is definitely your friend...it also helps to have someone bag and label fasteners, etc. as you remove them.

They will probably strip out, i don't think they usually break off...They will pull out of the head as you go to install the exhaust manifold, you will start to torque them, and they just keep turning...hmmm...if that happens, then just keep tightening until they come out, and you will have to heli-coil all of the ones that pulled out.

On mine, the top three studs pulled out, the others were fine...You should probably drill them out when the head is out of the car, as you have to have a right-angle drill to do it while the head is installed.

You could also order Aaron's stud upgrade kit to eliminate this problem completely...I used that penetrant stuff you're talking about, and it made the nuts on the manifold come off like butter ;).

about how much does it cost?

edit: well im done for the night until tomorrow morning. its all going pretty smooth right now. well except that 1 of the 3 exhaust manifold studs that i've messed around with came out all together. the others i just sprayed pb on them and will get them off tomorrow. the guy said that to helicoil 1 hole its fucking $20. i didnt think it would be that much.

anyways, tomorrow im going to start tackling the lower intake manifold area. do i have to worry about getting fuel coming out from anywhere??? also, is the little probe that goes into the upper intake manifold inlet the cold start injector? i got it out of the way, but kinda made a mark in the probe stick thingy. hopefully thats not toooo sensitive.

one more thing. what is the best way to completely flush out the radiator. i have it out of the car and want to get it all cleared out. should i just stick a hose end into it and let er rip? thanks!
