BHG - Now What?

About 2 or 3 months ago I started noticing coolant coming out of my reservoir bottle. I saw abosolutely no oil/water mix after oil change. I was thinking the worst (anal retentive that I am) so I bought a NAPA Block Test Kit. Sure enough, the blue fluid turned yellow. So while I asume the fluids are not combining, I'm definitely getting exhaust gasses in my coolant. I've been driving the car with this symptom about 2 or 3 times a week, all for trips of less than 10 miles. Could that have caused much damage? I am not tackling this job on my own. I already paid the mechanic $900 for labor, and he said he'd go easy on me for parts, as long as the head ain't cracked (which I doubt, I had to prove to him that I had a BHG as he said the car ran wonderful). Now, while he has this all torn down, would this be a good time to get valves worked on? The NAPA test says you can check each cylinder, but I don't see how, when the throttle body covers at least 2 of them. Anybody who's been through this before and would like to offer me some advice, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

3 angle valve job and getting the head milled should run you an extra $300. $900 for labor seems a bit high.

$900 in labor to replace a head gasket is a smokin' deal...the cheapest I have found around here is like $1200 in labor, and it goes up to $2500 with some places. Some places won't even TOUCH a 7M.

And yes, get the valves done now, while it's all apart, you will thank yourself later, and your car will run better/make more power.

Wow, guess its that "cost of living" difference between here and there. I'd do an n/a here for around $1200, parts, valve job, machine work, and all. That's Felpro gaskets, water pump, t.stat, Gates timing belt, Castrol 10w30 oil, WIX oil filter, coolant, heater hoses, and rad. hoses. If you need a radiator, add around 300.
