Just me whining , I am bummed that I can't drive my car:cry: I have a few parts sitting on the floor and a brand new rad in the car .I miss her this sucks . I am stuck driving an auto Ford Ranger   I called a shop in Seattle and they want 1700.00 for the head gasket repair . They said the head r&r was 10.5 hrs at 90.00 an hour .Then to strip down the head and hot tank it was the remainder (sp) of the total . So it is going to be a LONG time before I get to go boosting .I wish I could do it myself but I know my limitations and this task exceeds them . So what to do ? I guess I am just bummed that I only really got to drive it for a month before the HG went to shit (damn jdm p.o.s.) . I just need some support from my fellow addicts .ITS all worth it right?:icon_conf

Don't feel too bad probably most of us have been there, I have been there twice. Once with a n/a and recently with a turbo so I know how you feel.

To be honest the thought of doing it myself has crossed my mind . A few reasons that I wont/cant are.
I am intimadated by it
I don't have all the correct tools
I don't have a garage or even a concrete drive way to work on
I am working 60+ hours a week because of christmas peak (FED Ex Driver)

With all the info that I have gotten here . There is alot of info that I don't grasp .I am trying to understand and make sense of it all but it boggles the mind.

ur where most of us were at one point, every supra owner Ive met so far, well MOST of them, have hit this issue and like me, decide to do it themselves. Hell Im about to make my rod knock repair thread today, youll see what scarry is when u see my garage. I kinda laugh at HG repair now, I could do it in a day probably. You get there once u get past fear and try it... we all did.

not that hard to do at all. really simple actually.

as far as hot tanking it, ive found that engine degreaser/easy off will do the trick too! thats the 1 thing i forgot to do when i did mine. gotta retorqe the bolts and then im gonna give it a lil while till i hit boost. its really hard not to spool it up though.

You'll be intimidated by it until you do it.

I dont have a garage or a concrete driveway either, but we did it anyways, in 40 degree weather with winds gusting to 30+mph, lol.

you want something bad enough, you can do it. Only cost us $50 to do ours, including the head gasket and coolant. Only special tools needed really is the 10mm hex socket and torque wrench.

If you're putting a MHG on, you'' of course need to tear out the engine and haul it to a machine shop. That should be about $200 I would guess? You can rent a cherry picker for relatively cheap ya know. Get yourself a mat or tarp to lie on for the ground.

Seriously, you can save yourself $1,000+ by doing it yourself with the help of the TSRM and this forum.

If this girl can do a HG repair in a few hours, I'm sure you can manage to do it too

A woman that can work on a car!! If I was not married! hehe..

On the topic. Here is an idea. Get with someone local from here like I did. I found someone to work on some things I was not shure I could do or had no time to do. I paid ALOT less then a mechanic got BETTER service and support and hopefully made a friend! (he knows who he is!) I can also relate to the BHG. I am about to start a thread about myne. I did it tonite! I went to the drag strip and 2nd pass down it was all done! Had to rent a trailer and tow it home. had water come out of the tail pipe. I am going to do some of the work but I will have Idealsupra do the hard stuff. And this gives me a chance to clean up the engine bay and switch to automatic. ( I will get yelled at for wanting auto hehe) But we will build it better and faster! So cheer up! dont give up! We are here to help.

Some of you say it took you day or so. I was under the impression when you take your head off you need to get it milled in case it might be warped. Is that not the case on all HG repairs? If so why?:icon_conf

the head SHOULD be resurfaced on all hg repairs imo. however sometimes people dont do it when they put on composite hg's.

if using a mhg it needs to be done 100% of the time....

Mine was another success story, and I only got 2 weeks out of mine before BHG. I can vouch for everything the others have said, and it turned me into a Supra obsessive. The cool thing about the tools is that almost everything can be done with 10, 12, and 14 mm wrenches & sockets. And by the way, it seemed like the impossible before I started, too. Do it, save money, and have fun. :)

MHGs need milling definitely.

I have not ever had any of my heads machined, but the other engine that had BHG was basically trash at that point and I treated it as such. When we changed this last HG a few weeks ago, we straight edged it and it was fine (amazingly) so we just slapped it on.

For extra precaution we torqued to 85 ft lbs. Not entirely sure whether she will hold up or not, but we didnt have the money to machine the head nor get new head bolts. She's been running fine for the past couple weeks, runs ice cold and has full power again.

(also keep in mind I'm running 5M not 7M and I am in no way boosted, lol)

Are composites like original equipment? Sorry, hate to sound like a dumbass but I will probably be undertaking this task sooner rather than later. I stare at my engine and ask how in the hell am I going to do this. But if I can swap a 22R-E out of a 1985 Celica GT-S I guess I can do this. I'm trying to see it as a challenge, an initiation in the Supra club if you will, instead of seeing it as a major fucking pain in the ass.

I knew you had a BHG as soon as I looked under your hood, my friend Brad tried to tell you but you seemed like you felt it was something else. Too bad, at least you got a couple of passes out of it.
