If the key isn't broken in the lock position, it's gonna be stuck in there. The good news is that in that position you can pull the entire lock cylinder out and work on it that way.

Not always true.. I been in passenger seats watching someone who already had a damaged key break it off when it wasn't in locked position. It broke off but had a slight lip to it where I was able to pull it.. In this case it sounds like it's in there good.

That's probably because the cylinder is messed up. I can take my key out with the engine running, but it's not suppose to work that way.

lol i had a chevy that did that.

ok i've done this and its worked for me. Find a thin metal toothpick looking object and go to work. I've gotten keys out like that before. Takes some time but u should get her out unless its really jammed in there.

If you can get a replacement lock set or since you said you'd probably be parting out the car, I would drill or hack the cylinder down to the key and slide it out.

The motor is blown too right, so I wouldn't think you'd need to start it up. If you still want to use it. Drill two pilot holes beside the key and use a needle nose to pul it out. You can get a ket cut hopefully by what's left or the VIN and go from there.

How much of the key is in the lock, can you see it? I have pulled two broken keys out of my ford with old dentist tools and the key was pretty far in there both times...

Guyana, I'm keeping the car so I'd rather not destroy the lock cylinder. The key is stuck in there from the point where there are ridges on the key (the rest of the key that goes in the cylinder is about 3/4" long). I'll be pulling it out today by trying to use a scroll saw blade.
