Stick with an HKS gasket (2.0mm thick if you want to run a lot of boost) and go with ARP bolts or studs. Studs are better in the long run, because you can reuse them, but bolts are easyer to re-install. This is because you can't remove the head from the engine in the car because it needs to come up and off of the studs. It also means that the head needs to go straight down onto the block from above, so removing the engine is needed in order to remove the head.

I would almost suggest removing the engine for a BHG anyways, just because everything is such a pain in the neck to get to when it's in the car and you can clean everything up better before reinstalling it. You don't have to, but it makes things nicer when everything is said and done.

I've got $256.50 on the 2.0mm HKS Metal Head Gasket from http://www.andysautosport.com

I know that Andy's Auto Sport will beat any price on the stuff that they have, but they don't have everything.

I also have $113.69 on the ARP stud kit from http://www.summitracing.com

Summit is THE cheapest outlet for new ARP fasteners.

Both places have free shipping from the warehouse outlets, just call the 1-800 numbers at the sites to make a purchase.

You also need to have the block and head machined specificly for a metal head gasket. Machining the head for a standard gasket is NOT the same and you run the risk of having the head gasket not seat unless they use the correct resurfacing stones to cut the head and block. It needs to be a mirror finish for the gasket to seat and have a good seal.

You should also retorque the head at 72ft lbs instead of the lower recommended setting from Toyota.

Thats a killer deal on the HKS. I bought the 1.2mm for around $300 and that was the cheapest I could find for that. The 1.2mm is a stock replacement, a 2mm is a little better for more boost because it lowers compression just slightly. I know just as many guys if not more running the 1.2mm though. Theres only .8mm diff. So I guess its what ever is cheaper or what you want to do. As far as the ARP head studs/bolts. I hate to say this but on Ebay you can find them for around $75 at times. Later and good luck T

Ebay is always a good source, but it's not always there, like you said. Good point though.

the ARP headbolts are re-usable too, i dont know where you got that info from... the studs are better because when you tighten them, you're not trying to torque the threads into the head, which creates friction. with the studs, you get a more accurate torque reading, and better overall clamping force because you're tightening a nut, which doesnt have as much friction when clamping down onto the head... either way, make sure you use the moly lube that comes with them.

and the new style ARP headstuds enable you to pull the head/put head on with the motor in the car...
