Well, it is what it is... I have a lil bit of baby rod knock starting. I know it will only get worse, and the only thing I can do is rebuild and start over. But..for starters, I don't know anyone that will help rebuild the motor or install a new one other than my local auto shop. So it's a cost issue. Assuming that it will be some time before I am able to get a replacement engine, and assuming that I plan to replace the entire engine, should I be worried about driving it? I'm going to baby it, but I can't not drive it. What's the worst that could happen, and if you guys were in my position, what would you do??

Just some friendly conversation,

thanks guys and gals...

I come from a land down under
Jex: Try some heavier Oil and maybe some Teflon type Oil additive.

The Heavier oil will help stop the Oil wedge being displaced and the Teflon will help prevent the crank picking up bearing material if it does.

Dont use Lucas oil stabilizer, its not a good choice since it foams up especially with our gear driven oil pumps.

Just lift the engine and check the rod bearings. easy fix just takes some time, shouldnt cost you too much either. new bearings are $7.00 USD each.

If you want the easy way you can just switch to a heavier motor oil, it wont neccessarily fix the problem though.

thanks for the tips guys. I've got 20w 50 in there right now. I just changed the oil and haven't driven the car on it too much. So it's still clean oil. I may try some additive or something along those lines. The problem with trying to check the bearings and lifting the engine is that I don't have the tools, a garage, nor do I have the know-how to do so. So it would be me taking it to a garage. I might do it anyway, just to see if I can fix the problem before it gets too bad. Just a matter of time I guess.

In order to own a mkIII, you either need tools, a garage, and the know how, or a butt load of money. I've driven these cars for 16 years, so I know this from experience. I'm not trying to shit on you, just telling you how it is, good luck with the problem, hope you get it fixed.

It's all good man. I know what you're saying. The reason I have this car is because I bought it off of a good friend of mine who had the know-how, the garage, and the tools. Now we live about 65 hours apart. So I'm stuck with the responsibility of it on my own. I can't bring myself to sell her, so I'm gonna go balls deep and try my best to keep her. Know what I'm saying?
