I wasn't sure where to put this so I hope OT is the place...

A guy at my work lost his car due to a car fire that started from a small electrical short. Now I am going to stop putting off buying extinguishers and just do it Now ha.

I am lost when it comes to extinguishers however, so many types and styles and sizes. I know the bigger the better in this case if budget allows so I am planning a 2.5lb bottles. However, do 1lb bottles offer any real world use or just skip 1lb and go 2.5 at least? I am not ready to go all out with a suppression system but that is definitely on my to-do list now.

What about types though? Is halon the absolute best choice, are there different type of halon extinguishers(auto, aviation or whatever)? I read that normal home use type extinguishers will ruin the car(eat away at anything aluminum?). I want to be able to salvage the car obviously if I do ever need to use the extinguisher.

Would I be safe using a dry chemical extinguisher and just making sure to properly clean it up afterwards to avoid problems? The dry chemical ones are about half the prices as halon so it would be nice to go that route if possible. Is cleaning the dry chemical residue a huge deal or something you can get totally clean with a good shop vac?

Anything else to think about or advice before choosing extinguishers?

I am looking at these, I know there's other options but this brand is something sold almost everywhere so I figure best not to deal with shipping(hazmat fees).

I forgot, does heat effect extinguishers? Can I leave one in my car parked in 120 degree heat with no effects to it?
