for an external trans cooler go as big as you have room for. HEAT is the #1 killer of automatic transmissions.
if you are going to replace it, go with one of the "tru cool" type coolers, those tube and fin coolers are Old school and are not that efficient. hayden and Long make them, there is also a alluminum version.

i put a 15 by 7 tube and fin oil cooler on mine, dont remember the exact fitting size the hoses came with it, the thing is i had NOWHERE to put the thing, its not that big but its still impossible to find a place to mount hte bitch. i ended up putting it infront of my stock intercooler covering about half of it. at idle if i just let the car sit and i put my hand behind that part of the intercooler its kind of warm and i can feel the heat getting out but if i drive it at anything over 30mph and get out and feel it the tranny cooler is hot but the intercooler is still cool.

yea its old school but for about $60 a went down a geusstimated 30-60 degrees.

waht other places are there to mount these things?? i probably wont do it till spring cus winter is coming and anymore trany cooling and i'll be runnign with jelly for oil.

I have an 89 n/a, so I put a Carquest (made by Hayden) 12x5" out in front of radiator about 6" with some metal brackets for mounts. I did not want to put it on the radiator because it would transfer too much heat.

If mine was turbo, I'd definately put it after the intercooler, somewhere, as I would want the coolest air possible going into the engine.

I was thinking of making a mounting bracket for right behind the electric radiator fan. No matter where you put add-ons, you'll always be putting heat from one liquid to the cooler of another. So its always a problem of sorts.
