My wife's car is an '89 turbo and mine is a '91 turbo. At 85 she is turning 2800rpm. My car is turning 3500rpm. This pisses me off. Is my overdrive not working? It sounds like it shifts right. It pulls like hell since it's not in overdrive, but I'm always running at 3500-4000 rpm when on the highway. I'm probably only getting like 10 mpg. Could I have a different transmission or rear end than her '89? How many options were there for our year of car? How would I check to see what transmission I have if there is more than one choice? Thanks.

Thanks IJ. Is there anywhere on my car that would tell me what differential I have? Would it say on the diff, itself? When I had my 5 speed 91, it turned about 3000 rpm at 80. This didn't bother me that much until we got hers and I seen how low her rpms turned. Thanks again for the help.

I come from a land down under
Nope nothing external

There's a data plate in the engine bay but that will only show what diff the car shipped with and it sounds like either your OD doesn't work or it's had an NA 4.30 swapped in.

You both have an automatic? You both have stock size tires? Becuase both of your speeds are wrong.

85 mph with an A340E and 3.73 with stock tires will turn just over 3000 rpm. With the converter locked.

I have 17" wheels on mine. I also meant to say 80 mph. (straight up) My wifes is doing 2800 rpm at 80. My overdrive may not be working, because I have an aftermarket shifter. Theres two wires in the shifter and when I hook them up it won't shift out of third. There's only two wires and I tried it both ways. There is an overdrive button on my shifter and it doesn't help any when the wires are connected. I have them disconnected right now. Does anyone have a spare factory shifter? I'll go back to stock if it will help me with my rpm's....lol

When I removed my stock shifter, there were two wires coming out from the stick. My new shifter has two wired coming out of it also, but when I install them the thing won't shift out of third..........I know, crazy right? I'm not an electrician and I've never played on on t.v., but I do build additions and I know how to wire stuff up. BUT I can't get two freaking wires to get along, so I just have them unwired and I'm turning 3500 rpm at 80 freaking mile an hour.
