That switch is the neutral safety switch and it will allow you to start your car only in Park and Neutral. Do you have transmission codes?

If the car starts in any gear it's the Neutral safety switch

previous owner said it did this before the transmission blew to pieces.

I rarely do this but this is my "understanding" so keep in mind I may not be correct.

The NSS is on the trans itself

The switch the OP unplugged is the Sector switch and on a a343e it sends a gear indicator signal to the dash (not sure if the ECT takes this info as well)

I believe the ECT is part of the ECU on Jz cars.

As far as I know the NSS only affects the starter.

The selector switch is another matter though, I'm not sure how much info the ECU/ECT use from it.

Have you checked for Trans codes yet?
