Yes i know there is a thread on this from almost a year ago but I have a different question. My friend who drives a 93 eagle talon, ya, enough said, claims that if i swapped from a automatic transmission to a manual transmission, i would have to replace the ecu aswell. Is this true? I never saw anything about replacing the ecu in the other thread so I'm going to guess he's wrong.

i dont think you would need to change the ECU i imagine it is much the same as doing it on a supra and bypassing the neutral safety switch...

Since it seems like I'm the only one that's done it, don't get me wrong - others have, I know - just NO ONE during my search was able to provide exact details.

Ok, well... here goes nothin'.... my attempt at enabling the reverse lights in a "how to" thread.

I don't have a schematic book, so connections will be based from plugs and wire colors in my '87. And for ease of install... I cut the harness from the auto tranny (basically wanted to use the plugs).

In the attached pic, from left to right, you have the following:

1. 3 wire round plug, wht/blk spliced together enable the bypassing of the clutch (ie. pedal pushed in isn't required to start the car) and the blue is 1 of 2 wires needed for the reverse lights

2. 6 wire round plug, this plug actually tells the ECU which gear the car is in. If you searched for "auto cookie" you'll find some more info on what lead to the connections. Anyways, the only wire needed from this plug is the blk one (this is 2 of 2 for reverse wiring)

3. 6 wire square plug. not used for 5 spd. IIRC, it was linked to the 3 solenoids on the DS of the Auto tranny

4. 4 wire square plug, its a direct plug'n'play for car's with an ABS system.

Thanks for all the info guys, I asked this question because there is a EXTREMELY nice auto 92 turbo where I live for sale with low milage and a bunch of goodies but I want a manual. So it's either i spend 6000 on this car to buy it and switch it to manual orr, buy a nice manual for 6000. I ciuld probably get a better car with 6000 instead of having to sink money just to turn it into a manual.

well i've done 3 auto to manual and none of them had a manual ECU .If you doing swap from N/A to turbo then the ecu will be an issue but again mt or auto ECU will not matter.

its 4500 for the 92 auto turbo i was looking at, then 1500 approx to do the manual switch, around 6000. I could get a really nice moded 92 Manual for 6000.
Thats a steal for a 92, are you doing the labor yourself? I did my manual swap for a lot less

Well in the other thread, someone said ( I'm not sure who ) 1500 in parts to make it a manual, doing the labor yourself. How much did you do yours for?
