So i bought a supra and its a auto i wanna do a r154 swap but am not sure. Is it worth the time money and work you have to do? I havr noticed in the threads that 50% of people say its really hard and 50% say its easy. And input?

Just depends on how much sweat and bloody knuckles you are willing to put into your car. If you just got this car there are a lot more things you need to work on then just the tranny. That being said 154s are almost indestructible so yes is defiantly worth the swap if you can afford to do it.

For a first timer to gearbox swap. I suppose it would be hard.

For someone that did it more than few times then it would be easy for them.

If you don't plan on making big power yet w58 would be a smoother tranny to stick around with.

If it's worth it is an opinion, and anything's worth it if you want it bad enough. Do you really like the idea of your car being a manual and hate it being auto? I'm the reverse, I'm gonna swap out my r154 for an a340e controlled by a SSv4. No you can't have my 5-speed lol, I'll need it for something later.

You realize this question can only be answered by a biased opinion. For example, of course it isn't worth it. Why spend all that extra money to make the car slower in the quarter? Have the valve body redone, and the torque converter loosened up.

Its all driving pref. your Hp goals are alittle lower i'd say then most of the dreamers that we call supra owners. A W58 would be better for daily driving then a R154. The R-154 is strong a beat the crap out of mine day in and day out for about 3years now and its still the same lol. And the Auto is faster and best for Daily Driving (But IMO boring.)

That being said i almost want to convert my car to a Auto. But im unsure the needs to build it to my Hp goals and i know the R154 can handle it.

If you like manual better than auto then yes its worth it.

Auto needs to be modded to handle 350wheelhp.

Really the biggest pain about changing the trans if you dont have a lift and/or a trans jack is the acutal part of removing and installing the trans.
IF you loosen the engine mounts big 17mm and let the trans hang and tilt the engine, just use some extensions and a 14mm swivel and you can make the top bolts easy. For the starter i wedge a 14mm short wrench against the starter and use a swivel and extensions on the other end and that makes that easy.

The rest of the job is cake.

Im just shooting for 350rwhp for now i will continue to build for around 450-500 but thats a long way off right now. I feel its more fun to drive a stick then an auto also but whats the appeox cost to do the swap vs build the auto?

If you can rebuild an auto yourself, the cost is probably still more to do the auto with the valvebody and torque converter.

So the manuel swap is more cost effecient in the long run

I don't think it is cost effecient if you spend money to go slower. You are a long way from being the only one that wants direct control over engine speed. I do see your desire. It just isn't for me.

I think that auto or manual is mostly a matter of personal preference, and some of what you want to do with it.

I believe that autos (Provided that the transmission can handle it) will be faster on the quarter mile, particularly with turbocharged engines if for no other reason than the fact that it doesn't let off boost in order to shift. I believe that autos are somewhat more trouble on road courses, due to being unable to select the gear when you get back on the gas at the corner apex.

The most cost efficient transmission is the one that's already in your car, unless you've managed to reduce it to a heap of scrap, and then it's probably still more cost efficient to replace it with another similar one.

That said, it's probably more cost efficient to swap a manual into an auto car, rather than buy a different car if a manual is what you want.
