At what point do I need a tune?

Just bought an 87 Turbo 5 speed 120k miles. Updating and replacing ALL the old parts, fluids, and preparing have some fun with it. Checked all the head bolts to 75lbs, compression test comes back all around 175-185 psi. Purchased 935 motorsports divorced elbow/downpipe, planning an apexi intake, and hardpipe intercooler piping. Considering sending the turbo out for a 57 trim upgrade. What power range should I expect? At what point do I need to consider having a tune? Any all / info appreciated..

If you're on stock ecu there's not much you can do to it. If you have an SAFCII or some other fuel tuning device then you can tune it for the correct afr's.

I don't know much about the ct26's, but I would guess you'd be around 375whp, but again it's only a guess. Good luck.

57 trim would be pointless for you at this stage. With your current set up, even with a boost controller you wont be able to push more than 10-11.5 psi depending on temperatures and altitude, before you hit fuel cut. A stock ct is still within its efficiency range at that so an upgrade wont really help you any.

Thanks for the replies. GC89 are you suggesting a different turbo upgrade first or an AFPR? Or something different.

get a 57 trim upgrade, safc, walbro fuel pump and drill out the j-tube when you get the walbro

you can run a 57 trim ct26 at stock boost levels without fuel cut. thats wat my cars has on it right now and a 3in down pipe and catback and i have no fuel cut

^How much power are you making on that setup? I've got everything but the 57 trim. I don't know if I want to do lex/550 or just do a 57 trim and stay under FC.

The way I understand it a tune is good whenever you change the air or fuel in any way on your engine. There are plenty of Supras running around untuned, even on a piggyback, with basic mods just fine though. My A/F ratios were fine during my dyno run but I could probably gain a bit of power and gas mileage with a S-AFC or similar device.

how do you drill it out( j-tube) cant you just by-pass it?

rtrdpenguin- not sure never dynoed but my guess is some where between 230-250 whp with 5psi most of the time unless i really get on it which it will go to about 7(which i dont do much) but i never hit fuel cut. but i only have 3 in turbo back exhaust stock intake with bov vented to atmo(soon to recirc when get a chance)

dumbo-you can bypass it or you can remove it and there will be a small hole on one end which you just make the hole bigger to about the size of the inside diameter of the tube. but dont go too much or you can crack the tube. if you get a afpr kit it is usually easier to just bypass it.

That was only answering his question of what is stock boost. And your point should be taken by all of those wanting to crank it up on a stock car.

What BOV and boost controller would you guys recommend? I also should probably put on a turbo timer too...

bov is up to you, what sound do you want pretty much.
a turbo timer is good no matter what power levels your at.

I personally would get the turbo timer before absolutely anything myself. It's not a "gee wizz" that feels great add-on in any way shape or form but it's certainly a great "reliability" factor.

Even if you stay bone stock I would get one.

I'd guess that guess was based on the 57 trim CT, and maybe a Lex/550/Walbro addition.

Boost controllers are very cheap. You can get a manual boost controller for probably $25.00

Damn Ebay on this one. DrJones sells a very good one for $25. Why not support a well-known member/vendor here, instead of crap-shooting with ebay vendors?

PS - Not picking on you Jay

Ok, your not hitting fuel cut because your still running stock boost. I feel theres some not "wrong" but deffinatly unneeded info getting thrown at you so Im going to try to address everything I have heard tossed at you.

If you plan on staying under fuel cut your mods are easy, dont waste your money on a 57 trim. The only reason to go to a 57 is if you are running outside the stock CT's efficiency range, say 14-18 psi. Under 12psi the stock ct is fine and fuel cut slightly lower than that so your fine. I would always recomend replacing your 20 year old fuel pump. Not the biggest fan of wabros but most people dont want to deal with something thats not a drop in. A tune is always a good thing but you dont really need a piggyback to tune when running under fuel cut and especially at stock boost. The stock tune is on the safe side and your not going to see much of a performance gain at all. The car adds fuel according to the amount of air that goes in, even when you raise the boost it will still keep your afrs right you dont have to worry about it. Other than a fuel pump DONT mess with your fuel system and dont drill out the j-tube its there for a reason. Leave everything alone unless you are getting an AFPR then deal with the jtube. So basically you dont need much. You dont need to tune you dont need a turbo upgrade, or bigger injectors. All this would be a waist running under fuel cut. For what your looking at doing I would recomend a bosh 110 for a bov, they are cheap and work! Turbo timer eh, I personally will save my $60-$150 and just let my idle for a couple min before shutting it off. If you need any more info please use the search button there is tons of info on this already. Good luck hope that helps you out
