hello there,
i've got this 89 turbo and i got it running again a few weeks ago. runs great but its slow as balls. i atribute this to the fast its bone stock for the most part and has an automatic transmission. a perons i know in the area just crashed his 87 or 88 turbo and is parting it out. he just sold the motor and i asked him about his transmission (5speed of course). he said 300 dollars and i can take eveyrthing i need for the swap. it sounded like a good deal but im not sure (feel free to throw in your two cents). im seriously considering it but i was wondering what is involved in the tranny swap?. is it do-able with out any major fabrication? will his 87 or 88 transmission work with my 89. i thought it would cause they are both turbo models but im not sure if there are any differences in the years. ive never done a tranny swap before but i do all my own work on my car so i fidgured id give this a shot. i have help and know how to drop a tranny but how involved is it to switch my car over. i want to get everything i can from his car and i need a list and it would be great if you guys can add anything or 'edit' my lsit so i get everything i need. i was thinking..
tranny, mounts, clywheel and clutch assembly if it were in good shape, brake and clutch pedles, master and slave cyls, ecu, drive shaft, rear.
is that all ill need or will i need motor mounts too or a starter or any plates? also what in the way of a wiring harness will i need? i know the driveshafts are different sizes because the auto tranny is longer therefore has a shorter DS. i was also told the rear is diffent and there are three different rears for these cars and you want the one that belongs to the transmission you are using. how true is all of this and is this swap something i can do without running into major problems. thanks for your time and input.
