arp head stud question

Sorry for the stupid question, but i bought a set of 2nd hand arp studs from a guy on this forum and there was no washers in the package, am i supposed to use my old stock washers or no washers at all???? i know, im an idiot!

It should have came with washers. The set I bought new didnt come with them either (previous owner opened up box to look at them and some how lost the washers) I sent a quick PM to Ian and he said it would be alright if I just reused the factory ones, so that is what I did

Concur...you can use the OEM washers.

im also in the middle of a bhg job and i have studs that the previous owner put on but he used no washers ...where can i get a hold of some washers

They look like they're regular washers but I wouldn't go with anything other than the arp or dealer. But thats just me.

ok, so now im pissed. I cleaned the block surface. chased all the threads for the headstuds (that sucks by the way). then i took my headgasket and coated it in permatex copper spray, then laid it in place, wrestled the head on, threaded in the studs i bought from the dude on this site, the started each nut, but when i got to the last stud, i realized I WAS 1 NUT SHORT!!!! i was screwed so all i could do was use a stock headbolt that i had. i got them all torqued to 100ftlbs. will it work??? or am i screwed and destined for another bhg??? im soooo pissed off right now:icon_evil

you should only torque studs up to 80lbs depending on which type of lube you used and i believe you should get another stud and nut because the previous owner of my supra did everything right except use one stock headbolt and all studs i think he lost his nut also and im now in the middle of a bhg job because it wasnt done right the first time.

Suggest you get another stud nut, loosen them all up per the TSRM sequence, and re-do. I hope you did not start the engine. This time pay attention to the ARP torque spec...80 ft/lbs with moly for lube.

I havent started the engine yet so no worries there. I couldnt pay attention to the torque specs because I didnt get any lube or instructions with the headstuds. I used motor oil for lube and went will 100lbs. where would i get a nut from??? Will an autoparts store have a nut that would work? or does it have to be an ARP nut??? also, will loosening all the studs cause a problem because i used the copper spray?? or should it be ok??? ugh what a clusterfuck!

As long as you do not lift the head, the HG will be fine. You will need an ARP nut.

Stud torque specs are:
Moly - 80 ft/lbs
Motor oil - 120 ft/lbs

Since you went to 100 ft/lbs, it was not an over torque (a good thing).

Note the preload procedure in step one (I highly recomend you do it)...why you want to use moly for lube is in step 2.

Yeah, my buddy used the factory ones with ARP hardware, worked fine, no problems at all.. The OEM ones aren't "MUCH" different in terms or size or .. hardness? lol.. but you'd be fine with the old ones

Well, this is interesting. I have a 110K motor I took apart (which hadn't been touched previuosly), and there were no washers on the head bolts, and no washers on my other motor with the ARP head studs. So how does this work, the stud goes in, then the washers, and the nut I take it? Neither one of my motors had these washers, so this is news to me.
And how do you install the studs? Is there a different spec for them then the nuts, or do you just thread them into the block hand tight, and then torque the nuts? Thanks.
