I was wondering if any of you could tell from the pics if my cams could use to be replaced? And on the side of each cam lobe there is a ruff spot which I was told isn't a good sign!!!

How did you guys take your cam gears off cuz I don't have the tool to hold them while loosening the bolt. And everywhere I go says there not for retail sale!!!

Isn't there a section on the camshaft where you can just stick a wrench on to hold it in place? I'm pretty sure that's how I did mine.

Alternatively, if the timing belt is installed, and tensioned, you can hold the crank in place, and loosten the cam gear bolts.

Your cams looks ok to me, just a little dirty.

That motor is burnt! See how the cams are tinted brown? Not good bro... I'd think about changing the headgasket for shits and giggles, that thing has been run hotttt and the oil never changed.

As far as cam gears go? I just put an impact gun on the bolts and zipppp right off.

Read the TSRM on how to take the cam's off.
It comes down to taking all brackets off but #3 and #7. Then uniformly loosen these last two brackets.
First check the TSRM because the cams need to be in a certain position.

Be carefull, you will not be the first to break a cam when not doing it right.

Don't worry too much about the dark oil, it's not overheated oil, just a build-up over many years. It could have had more frequent oil changes though.

Overheated oil = brown stained metal.

More then Brown stained, that looks just like build up, I have seen overheated oil and thats not it. Looks like it could have done with some better maitinence and care. Most i can say is do a compresion check after a about 100 miles of it running to see where things are at, in that department.

I take that back.

You just need to take that thing totally apart, have it cleaned, blueprinted, all seals replaced, new bearings. Looks like you got a lemon of a motor compared to what most ppl get.

All the corrossion in the water passages? That's asking to break off within the first 50mi and clog a radiator. The things probably going to overheat anyways due to lack of flow.

It has been running quite rich looking at the coal build-up... Just clean up the head, replace the stemseals and it's ok.
The bottom end is the same as the top of the head; needed more oil changes and lots of oil build-up.

What are your plans with it?

I'm replacing every single gasket I can find on it and in the process I was planning on cleaning everything! I'm replacing any parts that need it with performance parts. I am planning on getting new piston rings, I'd like to up compression but don't know where to get the rings!!
