I'm getting ready to do my clutch here in a few days and was thinking about which trans oil to get. Right now I have a mixture of 2qts Redline MT-90 and 1 qt. GM synchromesh. There aren't any shops in my area that carry Redline trans oils, but there are a few GM dealers so I was just wondering if anyone is running straight Synchromesh and how its working for them.

My brother's car had a horrible 2nd gear grind when we bought it. Threw in synchromesh, fixed it. I was in awe.
Awesome stuff.

Checked the local Holden dealer IJ?

Be advised that Syncromesh is a lighter weight oil and bearing and gear life will be reduced in the R154 or W58.

I'm not aware of any bearing or gear longevity issues with running sychromesh. (in trannys it's not reccommended for)
I've also done the research on it.
I also use it in my WRX. I trust it that much. And it makes THAT much of a difference. I'm not into snake oils or anything, but my brother's 1-2 grind was SO BAD, we were going to get a new transmission. As a last resort, we threw it in. Didn't really expect much.
I was completely floored by it.
Great product.
Sidenote: Pennzoil synchromesh is the same thing. They manufacture it for GM. In the 80s GM was having problems with their truck transmissions fragging, so it was either hella recall, or come up with some magic fluid.
Viola! magic fluid.

Synchromesh oil is used in the NVG3500 manual transmission. This transmission was designed to be lubricated by 5W-30 motor oil. W58 and R154 transmissions were designed to be lubricated by an API GL4 or GL5 spec 75W-90 gear oil. Synchromesh does not meet any API GL specification.

Just because your transmissions haven't failed yet, don't recomend the same mistake to others as "no issues". It is similar to saying "I put water in my engine and it works great! I get better fuel economy and I haven't had any issues! I put it in all of my cars!" In that case, we'd all know you'd be having some problems tomorrow but, not everyone understands gear oil as well and there is no oil pressure guage staring back at you. It will take some time for the lubrication failure to show up in your gearbox but, it will. I'm sure it really does shift like butter, I don't doubt that. It is just a testament to the awesome reliability of the gearbox that it hasn't failed yet.

Redline MT-90 works just as well on the synchronizers and meets the proper lubrication specifications for our transmissions. IMO, more than worth the extra drive or mail ordering the fluid.

Im running Royal purple syn. 75-90w gear oil in my W58 its good but next time i think the synchromesh 75-90 version would be better for the tranny.

Well. Firstly, calm down. Secondly, I'm sure glad someone reccommended this "mistake" to me.
I guess only when you have nothing to lose do you take the chance and try something you aren't familiar with.
I won't be taking it out of my Supra, or my WRX.
I would, however, like to see 1 documented transmission failure caused by using synchromesh in a tranny it wasn't designed for...
Which would be any non-GM application. Which is probably where the majority of it is used.

Hey, put whatever you want in your transmission, it is yours, fill it up with monkey jizz if you want :squirt-mo . Just don't tell people that it isn't going to do any damage. The burden of proof is on you, seeing how even Pennzoil has in bold face type on thier website not to use synchromesh in transmissions that require GL spec. fluid. That is all I'm saying, and saying it perfectly calmly BTW. I'm very familiar with Synchromesh also, since I work at a Chevy dealer as a technician.

I've been running the Mobil 1 version of the gear oil for the w58 in mine (rear diff as well), @ 9k miles over the last 5 mos., no issues yet, no leaks, etc. And from past experience using it in other vehicles, I believe it to be directly related to my 22mpg avg. w/ 4.30 rears.
When I put it in the trans & frnt/rear diff on my Wrangler, I picked up @ 2mpg (even though I went to a lower gearset). Put @ 30k on it over the last 2 years, still getting @ 21mpg at 166k w/ 4.0 I6.
TIFWIW :)

I never said it wouldn't damage it. I never said it would.
I said "I'm not aware of any bearing or gear longevity issues with running synchromesh". Which is true.
Never heard of a single failure caused by synchromesh.
Neither have you I take it.
I've done alot of research.
It isn't what is reccommended. We know this. Not arguing it.
I'll repeat. I'm glad I tried it, because I would've needed a new tranny, or in the very least a new synchro. It completely eliminated any grinding. It's butter-smooth. It came highly reccommmended. We both don't know of ANY failures caused by it...
But we both know it isn't what's "supposed" to be in there.
Meh.

I'm sure you'll be the first to post up when your transmission blows up because you put the wrong fluid in it, JalopySiR. I'll be sure to let you know if any of my customers blow up thier multi thousand dollar transmissions because they wanted to try something different. Some of them have been known to try things they read on the internet.

Great. We can leave it at that. Please don't hold anything against me, as I'm sure I'll be needing help with some aspects of my car in the future. I'm in the middle of an ambitious project. Just don't get mad when people don't take your word as gospel.
No hard feelings. See you around.
